  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Wedding Prince Edward Island

As long as you can convince those in attendance at the wedding that you are not The Terminator. I did get some very curious looks throughout the day. Like,
what the hell is that on his shoulder, should we get under the table?

I think I see a Red laser coming from that thing. Did the groom piss somebody off?

That's not Uncle Charlie's Hi-8 camcorder.

Margaret, would you look at that, it's enormous. How does he keep it under control.

Who invited Spielberg?

Anyway, you get the idea. :-)

Nice work, Steve.

My cousin is getting married next month and I'm thinking about showing up with the RED, just because. I'm so tempted, their reception is going to be a masquerade ball, should be interesting.

These 1-man wedding shoots from you and Richard have got me wanting to try it. I think Tonaci did one too.. Anyway, nice looking stills, I want to see some motion! :)

If you have a compact rig that sits nicely on the shoulder, I think you'll have a blast. Or keep it on sticks whenever you can. If the reception is well lit, this will help out greatly. I was dealing with some very low light at the reception once the sun went down. I had to open up to a 1.4 and then focus became very tough, especially during the dancing.

But, if there's no pressure and you are just doing it for fun, have at it. They will be pleased.

I'm hoping to get to editing soon. Been dealing with media management to make room for this and other projects coming up. Once I have an edit, I'll make sure to post it here.

I think the ability to pull high quality stills could put wedding photographers out of business!

They are always trying to catch a "special moment". If the RED is always rolling you can grab that perfect moment...roll back a couple frames so they aren't blinking...history preserved.

Really nice shots!

Why? I think he was just making a point. Of course it's possible to pull great stills from the Red. But still photography and motion picture photography are just different and that's not going to change.

I don't disagree. I was pointing mostly at this:

"I think the ability to pull high quality stills could put wedding photographers out of business!"

I only mention this because on wedding photographer forums I see people blabbering on about cinema taking over the wedding photo industry, pulling HD stills, blah blah..

There is already an awful rift between the video and photo industry in the concentration of weddings, satirical or not, the out of business part scares a lot of people.

This is quite inspiring to say the least. Without a follow focus too? And all by yourself...damn. Now I feel like I jipped my friend when I shot his wedding on my DVX

Getting more fit for weddings 101 (a minimum of 3 hours per week by arrangement): squat, deadlift, hammer bicep curls (basically trains the muscles used to balance the front of the rig) and bicep/shoulder statics. And of course, a plethora or ab/core work. If you develop your core muscles and implement static training for your arm and shoulder muscles you'll be amazed at how easy balancing a heavy rig for long hours becomes. You know, sort of how those Olympic gymnasts can hold their entire body with their arms straight out :weight_lift: :weight_lift: :weight_lift:

OFF TOPIC:
I was recently talking to an IATSI production photographer who told me many photographers complain about RED during Union meetings and I really do not see RED as a threat, the camera is built for making movies and not taking pictures I replied. I can see in the wedding world why still photographers would want to adopt Scarlet...

ON TOPIC: Steve, well done! From what I see so far, your going to have some pretty pictures...thats for sure. One of my best friends just asked me to shoot his wedding and I dont think they get it...might as well say "I dont want to you attend the wedding, just work your ass off instead!" After hearing your report I think I will stick to 8mm film...give him the artsy coverage...maybe use RED for a few key epic moments, will 4k cut well with 8mm? lol

Best of luck...thanks again for sharing your experience.

Steve,

It all looks absolutely beautifull, really.

Not over processed, superb exposure, framing etc...

Natural and rich.

Cheers!

very good work!

Those shots were amazing. The video must have blown your friend's expectations.

About business: I don't think the Red One poses any threat to the photographers for one reason: lightning.
You can control it with a still camera and some light flashes.
With a motion camera you can't. The Red can resist low light conditions quite well but there's always a limit.
The strobist will always have an edge on IQ and creativity. The Less Gear - More Brain - Better Light motto applies here.

Hey J. Have you tried shooting a video with a RED one yet?

This must be the future for wedding photography. From a single source, you can produce DVD and/or Blu-Ray, plus an album of stills. Whether Scarlet will really be good enough for the latter remains to be seen, but it will certainly score on portability.

Would love to see a photo of the camera as it was tricked out for shooting that day. Did you strip it down to essentials for handheld?....no matte box...CF cards only....batteries on belt clip? EVF or LCD?
