RED WEAPON - the name

Arrows and dots and dashes and useless words sprinkled around seem quite acceptable in comparison to having the word WEAPON written on our cameras.

Of course, but one principle leads to another, hence the different approach to this issue.

It also helps in avoiding focus only on ears. Provocative naming of the product somewhere on the web and in paperwork is one thing, screaming from a high-end professional creative tool, pulling question marks above heads and "WTF" facial expressions on the shoot is another. Wording fest on a small electronic box is yet another.

Slightly adapted approach = cost savings in manufacturer's product tagging + improved industry perception + no need for name concealing tape on $30K professional tools.

Tape works, I used it several times on the BOMBEVF as I got hassled for having it a few times. They find it and then they want to bomb tops all the gear... in all the 10 cases. When that made me miss a flight I started to use tape, and things been much easer ever after. And what you put in the carnet is quite loose. RED camera and serial number would do. The word weapon would not need to go in there, they are not into that much of details.

But I agree. The name is juvenile as fuck, the film crews I work with are already making jokes about it. But I guess the name get traction among the skate kids with tribal tattoos, cool haircutsand multiple nose rings, So I think RED probably did the math and understands thats where they make the big money.

The jokes are already flowing freely in London. The Alexa crowd are having a field day. Why put more fuel on the fire. When people are having to cover up 'names' to travel it's becoming ridiculous. Manufacturers should be helping our work flow not hindering it.

I also don't care what it's called till it affects how I work and this just might. I love RED but, at best, when travelling from Europe it does nothing to help me and make my life easier. If I missed a flight I would be pissed to say the least.

Is this why you never use Canon Cameras and Canon lenses?

Bwah-hahahahahahahaha! Good one, George! (I was going to point out the missing 2nd 'n', but nobody likes a spelling nazi)

When I got my first R-1s, it was like they were the public expression of my id. Naming was more important to me back then. Now my cameras are just tools for the public expression of my creativity.

When I first saw the Dragon name I wasn't impressed at all. I'm more of a real-world type of person. Yet that did not create one second of hesitation when it came time to purchase the Dragon sensor upgrade.

But this discussion is a good one. I've seen the name "Weapon" referred to so many times in the past few days that it has been imprinted in my mind as being forever associated with the new camera form factor.

I suspect it will be widely known throughout the world as to what it is, by the time it is released.

You guys are persistent... Maybe we should make a poll.

You guys are persistent... Maybe we should make a poll.

If everyone voted that would be o.k.... but I fear that many who would check the "I don't care... you decide" box are out working with the RED cameras and wouldn't get in on the voting. Besides, since they don't care about the name, they probably don't care about voting. '-)

But personally, about taking a poll... do what you want... I don't care. '-)

RED L__D_R translating into RED LDR or RED L-D-R

named after Jim who was known as RED Leader on REDuser.

I was on set when the news broke out, there wasn't one reaction from crew member that didn't include laughter followed by: "you are joking, right?"
It's a weird first reaction to the new best thing in professional cinema.

Red should look at those reactions and this thread as a test screening. The response is not good where I'm standing.

Edit: Yes to a poll!

Polls are fun. :)

im still taming my Dragon, that's why I liked:

Dragon² (meaning or Dragon squared or dragon to the power of 2)

Loose EPIC altogether, like dropping "the" from Facebook.

But it really doesn't matter, it's gonna make great images :)

With all respect, please.

+1. Another possibility- I am ordering a Mercedes Sprinter. There is an option to buy it without badges. Appeals to me greatly. Possibly offer Weapon with/without badges.

I do like the Weapon name/attitude, but I would prefer it as an in the club house name. There is rule of thumb when traveling to third world countries and certain parts of the U.S.- always tell the Man what he wants to hear, and you will live to shoot another day.

Now that's bad ass!
Titan - Largest moon of Saturn
Titans - from Greek mythology
Titan Rocket (ICBM)

A little less blunt than Weapon and can't be necessarily pinned to an immediate reaction.

I give Jarred a lot of credit for considering putting it to a vote. Ultimately they should decide what they think is best for them but listening to customer feedback is very smart too. They've done this in the past as well.
