  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

there's awful nomenclature all over this biz!

I have a hard time believing that some of these sensitive ears even spend time on actual film sets. Salty language everywhere, sexual innuendo, bombast, nicknames for EVERYTHING, toilet humor.... it's like working among pirates!



Truly hard for me to believe that this discussion about RED's naming conventions has such life....

This is so much more modern. Young generations are more into second degree and funny stuffs. Weapon sounds like my grand parents kind of provocation in their time. Or Hell's Angels thing.

It was Jarred who came up with this, then he offered to brand my Weapon with it... I feel more and more that it would be awesome to have it done :coolgleamA:
 
Can these name threads be closed? The name has been chosen, done deal. You're entitled to your opinion but Reduser is now turning into to a complaint department on a freaking name that will not be changed, no matter what. The important stuff is getting buried. Get over the damn name. Gaff tape it if you need to.

How about we just move along?

Well it's a thread about the name, people who don't want to discuss about it or are bored can check some other threads I guess. I hope reduser will not become a censorship place with taboo subjects.
 
The fact that the name is stirring all this talk is great for the brand. So to continue the discussion, even though I dig the name, here's my two cents worth of nuthin! lol My fave would be:

I think it's a valid concern of enough people that this thread has gone this long. I'm a Texan so the name Weapon doesn't bother me in the least. Also I don't travel a lot but when I do it's typically within driving distance so I don't deal with the TSA on a regular basis.

All that said, how many of us just love standing in that line and shedding clothing for a full body scan and being forced to allow a total stranger to rifle through our personal belongings? I for one hate it. And those guy's are in no hurry at all. If I have the pressure of a shoot to get to and the pressure of everything else that goes along with it I wouldn't want something as trivial as the name of my camera to give anyone cause to pull me out of the line and interrogate me like I'm the terrorist.

Red has done so many great things for this community and I just think it would be great to make life a little less stressful for those who fly a lot.

I don't see the protest as a dogged oposition to militant naming conventions as much as I see it as a concern for increased hassle by the TSA.
 
One thing I will say is this.

there are a lot of assumptions being made about how the name will be displayed on the camera.

No one has seen the camera, right?

We've seen a prototype nameplate that's presumably affixed to the front of the camera and the whole piece is a little bigger than the the size of a quarter and removable.

We do not know where or how the name will be incorporated into the whole design. We do know the name will be used to brand "a" red camera. The Brand RED has been the dominat name on any of Red's products, with model names secondary.

For a carnet, RED digital cinema camera should suffice and tape or Velcro helps a lot. I've even taped an velcrod the name RED over a lot of cameras to lay a bit lower and because it's shines.

The name weapon is the name and will be the name, but it is a RED camera and that is how people will describe it. I've never called my Dragon a dragon, just my RED camera. This stuff is just more for us to know the small differences between, red one, red one mx, red epic mx, red epic dragon, red epic dragon weapon,....red weapon, ecc.

I appreciate that people have expressed their opinions and the reasons for their work are valid, it's fair and nothing has been shut down.

The one thing I ask is lets try not to insult each other over this.

Couldn't care less about the name. "Weapon" is unusual, that's about it.
As long as it's a good body shooting pretty pictures I don't care what it's called.

golden rainbow happy time..hahahahahaha You have to admit that sht was mad funny! Hey its a Weapon of choice. No matter what RED decide this camera better live up to its name and what happen to all of that infa red jazz? Still waiting man. I have ideas.

I think we are not giving the TSA enough credit. ALL cameras, regardless of name have been asked to have a battery mounted so the camera can be turned on to prove it is a camera.

I seriously doubt they think a terrorist will name their bomb "weapon."

One thing I noticed when I loved to LA was how bad copywrite is out here for allot of businesses. One of my favorite wing spots is called BigWangs, name drives me crazy but I still go for happy hour and wings its fun.... You get use to it.

I don't really care what it's called... ok maybe a little.... it is a little unusual...so many cool military tank or plane names they could have gone with if they pursue the military branding (Stryker, Dragon Eye, Fury, NightHawk, to name a few).

I would have gone with Beowulf or something along those lines; a Character that was a Dragon Slayer someone who can harness a Dragon. But who am I to say I named my Scarlet Chakotay after a Star Trek Commander :blushing:

At the same time I love Epic it's so perfect, had inspiration but still a very strong name. Whats wrong with Epic v2?

End of the day they are gonna ask if it's Red or Alexa the DP is the only one who usually asks what body/sensor.

As long as we get bigger bandwidth for Dragon Sensor thats all that matters

Weapon will grow on all of us it's here to stay.
 
While the name has been decided for this product and for very good reason I am sure, will not (and, pragmatically cannot) be changed, one benefit of letting folks who want to discuss this is that RED can hear what people think and take it into consideration in the future. Last time I looked there was no "auto-click" function on this forum that forced anyone to read a thread they weren't interested in. And now that the name issue has it's own thread, those that are uninterested can simply ignore it.
 
Everything has its downsides. If the new Red camera's name is the only downside I'll be happy.

Red has always had a weird taste towards military naming, skulls and all this other funky nerdy stuff. Not particularly cool in my part of the world. Ok. The product is innovative, high quality build, affordable, and the service is second to none in our industry. I'll get over the new name.

That's true we have yet to see what the camera looks like and I said recently it's what's inside the box that matters more than the label in theory.
I wouldn't have thought there would be much in the way of insults at this point.
The people who like the name are going to get it, so they can be happy and other than that people have been coming up with imaginary camera names which is fun.

It's been decided so now we can wait and see what the camera looks like and we can keep an eye out for the Golden Rainbow Happy Time camera too! :)
So hey I might not like the name of the new camera but I still have the "Golden Rainbow Happy Time" Camera to look forward to!
