RED WEAPON - the name

It's a good point. With the Red One the sensor is named on the side module which can easily be swapped out.

I also thought it was an interesting idea that changing the name plate could be some kind of paid upgrade. :)

Freya

While assuming the lady is not thin-skinned and has a sense of humor, I'll take her suggestion one step further and have RED offer as that paid upgrade the name Phallix.

Totally amazed by the amount of chatter regarding the name ‘Weapon’ around the web. On a marketing point of view what a great move, but really it makes no difference what its called.
At least it has a name and not some random camera number.

What about Zacuto’s the Gun Stock, the Enforcer, the Striker, Target Shooter, Recoil to name a few.

Lets not forget Marey's Fusil Photographique ‘Rifle’ or the WWll Japanese Type 89 35mm Machine Gun Camera http://picturearchive.gunauction.com/1364/10825945/03.jpg_thumbnail03.jpg

Well, David has re-opened this thread after Jarred has confirmed that the name won't change. Not sure what the point is but... whatever.
Would be nice if the new tactical cage didn't have WEAPON on it, last cage didn't have dragon or epic, I'd just buy the cage and public use name problem solved.

I guess some trademark papers or similar were filed, and personally I know my ego would battle my brain if I wanted to re-name a product I just went public with.

I agree with this. Trying to put myself in their shoes, I think they do not want their "Brand" diluted in any way, even if the buyer does not agree with the branding. It's a chance I think they are willing to take that the product will offer performance that overcomes any reticence over naming.

The name doesn't bother me at all. RED has always had an edgy mentality. If you go to RED Studios some areas even look like a military barracks. Ha. But this camera is great news and I can't wait to see what comes at NAB. Also the extended discount on the upgrade is even better, I'll defiantly be taking advantage of that. This camera is one of the best things I've ever bought, what I've been able to shoot with it and the small size is just amazing. Even firmware updates tend to make a whole new camera out of these little boxes. I'm sure whatever comes out will be impressive. Now to get back to shooting.

My point was personal brand would take a hit if the name I came up with had to be changed. Reds cameras can be called ANYTHING. It doesn't matter as the brand is RED. BUT... It starts to matter when the name is so unsophisticated/juvenile/cringe worthy that it makes good customers question a product. And lets not compare EPICs name to a WEAPON. EPIC never sucked so hard, or ticked so many unfortunate boxes as Weapon.

I wouldn't buy a laptop with WEAPON written on it. I`d feel like a complete twat.

Will we one day see a RED PORN? Is that too unsophisticated? Red is sexy?

Pew Pew.

Just saying that RED isn't a novice at branding.

And while you consider yourself sophisticated, and I see no reason to doubt that... you are probably outnumbered 100 to one among RED customers who by your standards are "unsophisticated" and see the name weapon as anything but juvenile. And after all, it is about customers because that's where the money to pay the help, fund R & D, and grow as a company, stems from.

As far as RED PORN, once a camera has been sold it is in the hands of the beholder to use it however. Morays are changing... Porn doesn't hold the same negative connotation it once did.

Would Red rather not have something more inspirational and positive as the name of their next GENERATION of camera other than "Weapon?" Something Red can be proud of. Having "WEAPON" engraved on the side of camera is going to give many professionals and even rental houses and moment to pause and reflect. Covering that junk up with gaffers tape is not going to work. They must have invested millions upon millions of dollars into this next generation of camera and "WEAPON" is the best they could come up with? "Weapon" is ugly, violent, insecure, silly and stupid.

"Mysterium" was and still is such a cool title for a young and cutting edge company ready to take on the world and change it for the better. "Weapon" is like a rude finger flick to the skull. It serves no positive purpose and comes across as lazy and arrogant. This whole militarized SWAT mentality has grown tiresome and is embarrassing.

Joe, I think you are out of touch with the thinking at RDC.

Is it the most catchy of names? Maybe not. It will grow on us, however, and we will get used to calling it a RED WEAPON. For those concerned about the negative connotation of using a weapon, remember that weapons are used for good as often as they are used for evil. Both the literal and the figurative senses of the word.

Regarding the customs concerns, perhaps on carnets you list it as a RED DRAGON instead of a RED WEAPON. It would not be an inaccurate thing to say. That plus some gaff would be a great solution.

Well said, couldn't agree more. The 15 year old boy militaristic attitude has always bothered the hell out of me but if that's red's marketing then so be it. My camera will always be a tool for creation, not destruction and death.

I'm looking forward to seeing a photo! :)

Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never shot with a cinema camera:)

Well said.

I will look out for some gaffer tape. Red could seize this opportunity and sell some with the WEAPON. They could name the GAFFER tape PEW PEW PEW BANG SWOOSH tape or.... WEAPON SUPPRESSOR tape.

For what it's worth ... most decision makers (producers, show runners, etc.) don't even say "Epic" or "Dragon". And they won't say "Weapon" either.

They just say .... "RED". "We want to shoot it on THE RED", "We want to test THE RED", etc. etc.

I could care less what it's called.

It's all about IMAGE, FUNCTIONALITY, FORM FACTOR and .... EXTENSIBILITY.

To me its just a name. It does not flow well off the tongue today, but its their product, their persona and I will buy it regardless of what it is called. In the end, the noise around the name really is a first-world problem. Though when you talk about loading the weapon with a mini-mag and shooting the weapon, the name works well.

The real question is has RED ever announced something that did not cause controversy? In the end, this will get them a lot of free press.

We can beat this to death so, what the hell...

I'd say that the number of people who LOVE the name is very much unknown, but probably not overwhelmingly high, since I don't see to many people saying quite that. That vast majority seem (!!) to be pretty much in the neutral category - like "Who the F cares about the name?" Then, there are those who fall into the range of disliking the name (quite a few, I'df say) to downright HATING it ( maybe not a majority, but they are out there.)

My take is that the great majority of people would be just fine with a less militaristic name; i.e. very, very few who would actually go out of their way to protest. Even if one is OK with "Weapon," I suspect they could live with an alternative. Meanwhile, the folks who find "Weapon" objectionable, will be happier and more supportive.

I know... never gonna happen.
