RED WEAPON - the name

You guys keep making my point. I don't wanna be on the receiving end of these jokes that will just go on over and over again. At what point will all this devalue what the camera can do? IMHO if there's even a chance of that, RED needs to consider the side effects on the naming. People that are already against RED will have a field day, pollute the airwaves with these kind of jokes and believe me or not, that will influence, even if just marginally, the decision makers against RED.
Regardless of what name RED chooses, someone will make fun of it. When the EPIC first came out, I would always hear things on set from NYU brats who failed as a DP and have to AC, would say things like, "the camera is called the epic, but can't do ____, not so epic is it." Or 1st AC "if this camera is epic, what is the Alexa?" 2nd AC "better." And on and on. The point is RED will always be part of the joke wheather it's the name or what it does, or what it doesn't do. They will always be pointed at and laughed at by a certain crowd. Because what RED is and what they stand for. The only way for people not to make fun of RED if there was a ARRI badge instead on the camera. Cause everyone always praises whatever ARRI does or doesn't do.

The fact this is a serious suggestion should raise flags as to the real problem the name has.

But I've only seen it be a problem with a few like yourself. I'm not criticizing you for your views, but for your demands YOUR criteria be met. I would have probably named the camera RED FIRE/FIREFOX/FEURER(leader) but then I would have taken flak for being an arsonist, pro-Russian air force, military dictator...

Voicing your concerns is one thing... a hammering drumbeat to get YOUR way is another. I'd rather have it named Weapon than Donald, that's for sure. Weapon is a lot less offensive.

Or raise flags as to how people are way too sensitive in 2015. If you're outside the norm at all people throw a fit. I'm personally sickened by it.

Calling a product weapon is not what I would call being outside the norm. Any kid love guns and weapons. It's like saying tattoo is outside the norm when any christian mother got one now. It's as outside the norm as hipsters are. Most people are not chocked by the name, they are worried by the possible consequences it may have on their work dealing with sensitive people from outside.

Personally I like it better than how ARRI names their cameras after pole dancers...

That's hilarious!

even RED lovers are busier making jokes about the name than talking about the possibilities of the new camera. Imagine people that don't like RED. This will totally distract away from the cameras capabilities...

i dont know know you guys, but I like producers and directors intrigued by my cameras capabilities, possibilities and doors that it can open rather than having my instrument that I invested a lot of money being ridiculirized, even if it just happens once.

I've been sitting on this name for a long time...but now...it is time...
RED TITAN

But the Titans represent death and destruction and were one of several weapons, arguably the largest and most powerful weapons in their arsenal, used by the gods to wreak havoc on the people below.

There are two fronts here - security and identity.

If some people (myself included) will have to duct tape over the 'weapon' logo and worry over what to put on Carnet documents when travelling to countries with jumpy, skeptical customs officials then that's a concern worth voicing. I've had sketchy enough encounters entering Ghana and Mozambique with cine hardware as it is, practically having gun written on paperwork and heavy pieces of metal in my bag won't do me any favours.

The specs of this machine will speak for themselves - this over the top bravado of violent language is frankly unbecoming of Red at this stage of the game. I really wouldn't look forward to telling people I own a 'Red Weapon'. They'll think it's some kind of bizarre innuendo.

For the people who are happy with the current name it won't bother them for it to change, for those of us with concerns about it it'd mean a great deal to see it revised.

Glad to hear you are not bothered. There are professionals voicing concern. That's part of what redusers is for.

Haha! But...but...RED...TITAN...

It just occurred to me... I'll bet productions like "The Blacklist" will switch to RED Weapon (if they aren't already shooting on RED) just BECAUSE of the name.

Seriously, with all the violence and inhumane things going on in the world at present, why anyone would waste energy protesting a camera name when they could be protesting serious problems... it's beyond me.

We're all just having a civilized discussion about the properties of a tool that for some of us may be the basis of our professional lives for the next two years. There are concerns about airport security in challenging environments and perceived childishness about the name. Is it still beyond you?

The RED Cinnamon.

In retrospect, I should have referenced hookers instead of pole dancers in my original statement.

I like RED Cinnamon.

So here are my thoughts on the name issue:

I don't believe it's an issue. For me, you can call it "Red Nuclear" if you want. It's a camera. I want it to do one thing, help me tell my story and produce great images. Again, I'm not knocking anyone's views, and I read through a lot of peoples opinions, I just, respectfully, don't agree. Here's why:

1) Who is going to know the camera is called Weapon? If you really think about this, who is going to know that this is a camera, from Red, and it's called Weapon? If it is engraved on the side, just put some tape on it if you're concerned about going through TSA here in the states, and whatever the equivalent is ex-US. Also, why would you tell anyone the name of the camera is Weapon?

Just for laughs and to lighten the mood, but I can imagine how a conversation with TSA might go (and I'm being very facetious here, not to disrespect anyone's opinions of the TSA here in the states, or anyones views on the name change due to personal reasons regarding violence...which is a major issue in our country now...but just want to lighten up the mood while we search for resolution- if there is one:

Scenario One- DP/Camera owner going through security clearance with camera brain on him vs. checking his bags (something a lot of people do to watch the main part of their gear)

Security: What is this?
DP: It's a camera.
Security: What type?
DP: A professional camera that I use for filming stuff. I was just on this movie set...
Security: Ok. You're good.

Scenario Two

Security: What is this?
DP: It's a Red Weapon.
Security: What?!
DP: It's just a camera from Red called the Red Weapon.
Security: Ok, what type of camera?
DP: It shoots stuff.
Security: Wait...What!!
DP: And thats my bomb EVF.
Security: OK, we need a full body search over here asap!

LOL! Seriously though, who is going to EVER call their Red camera a "Red Weapon" outside of anyone else in the film/production community? Who is going to know the difference between Red Epic, Dragon, Weapon, Scarlet from a laymen's perspective? Again, I'm just being facetious with my scenarios, but I think everyone get's my point.

Possible Solutions

1) (Someone did mention this) Red could just offer a non engraving Mini-Mag option when upgrading to Weapon, if in fact it is called Weapon, and the name is on the SSD component in the end...free of charge (it would actually save them money from having to engrave it). I assume that this would allow Red the ability to not have to change their body anymore, and make the sensors inside the brain, the truly modular component of the camera system, the only thing that's needed to be upgraded down the line (which I read somewhere as the route that Red wants to take it anyway I believe)

2) If it is engraved or monogramed on the camera brain itself (Red Weapon) and then down the line, with each upgrade, Red releases different types of "Weapons" to use with it's gear (which I think would be cool) then just put some film tape on it and keep it moving...They could call the initial upgrade Red Weapon with the new form factor, and then call the next iteration "Weapon X" ('ol Wolverine reference here...I'm a Marvel guy) or "Weapon Nuc", etc...either way, the solution should be easy to fix. I saw something similar with the Atomos Ninja, Shogun, Samauri, etc...but at the end of the day, people still bought it...and if you didn't like the name, people just didn't call it that, they just said it was their external recorder.

I might get ripped for this (I got ripped in another threat about the price drop) but I just wanted to share my opinion, in a respectable manner...sprinkled with a coupe jokes...
