RED WEAPON - the name

I'd feel bad if I ever ended up filming in a war-torn country, that's for sure.

For those complaining about the name of the camera (not because of travel issues), do you also refuse to DP/Cam Op on films that glorify violence?

RED's camera names sometimes take a while to settle in. Red One was a natural fit, made sense. I thought we would see a RED TWO, but alas we got Epic. At first, I wasn't sure about the name. It didn't feel like a model of camera. Well, that name stuck and started rolling off the tongue after a while. Then they announced Dragon and I was again not sure this was a great naming choice. It just didn't feel like a camera name. Now, some time has gone by and when someone mentions Dragon, the first thing that comes to mind is the camera. So, I've been wrong about this every time.

Personally I like it better than how ARRI names their cameras after pole dancers...

For those who find that to be a rather narrowly focused comment which only represents one possibility of a naming convention, please keep that in mind when talking about "Weapon" and "Bomb" or "Tactical..." this and that. A weapon is not always a tool or device intended to murder or wage war. And also remember that this is still a camera and it shouldn't matter all that much what we call it. Did you all suddenly decide to never buy another shotgun mic ever again?

Exactly.

Funny you should mention the rocket blaster. An AC good friend of mine lost his to the TSA because it resembled an actual bomb, therefore, just like with toy guns, it was confiscated.

ridiculous? Yes, but it's the reality we live in.

Um, he probably lost the rocket blaster to TSA because it's a specifically banned item. I'm not saying that it's a possibly banned item, I'm saying that you can't bring these and it's been this way for some time. I was also reminded last week that we're not allowed to travel with inflatable sports balls of any type (volleyballs, basketballs, et..) or any other such potential "container" that can be used to atomize or disperse any chemical agent or be used to mix and serve as a potential place to mix chemicals for other purpose. About the only type of container we can bring through security, and size is still restricted, are infant bottles. And to get those through, you have to be bringing a kid or two with you.

Now as to why he's saying he lost it for that reason -- because it looks like a [cartoony] actual bomb, is interesting. Makes me wonder if the TSA agent did not properly explain why it was confiscated, or if there is some other reason for the anecdote.

After reading this thread, I've decided to sell my "cage." Sounds too mean.

Now you're just being silly. My children love being in their cages. ;)

Put it to a poll? RED would be foolish to ignore such a weight of opinion IMO. This kind of market research is hugely valuable, particularly in advance of a product launch and is one of the major benefits of maintaining this forum.

I for one feel that a slightly more reserved nomenclature would benefit RED's brand identity in professional circles. And also, no-one enjoys talking to customs after a long flight...anything which could make them more likely to open up all the cases and have me match up every single serial number on my carnet is a bad idea in my book. I agree it's easily explained to rational people, but often there re language barriers etc to take into account.

Disrespecting people's point of view and being childish will take you nowhere fast.
The naming concerns are valid. Hurray for you if it doesn't bother you.
and regarding films that glorify violence, yes I passed on shooting one and I quit working on criminal minds for that very reason. I also passed on an oil company commercial. I take my views very seriously and I believe that us, as media content producers, have a responsibility to create media that somehow makes this world a little better.
So please, quit disrespecting people with different points of view. Be an adult and throw in valid arguments, not childish jokes.

I guess it all depends on people's background and work. People working on bigger international projects will obviously be more sensitive to that name's thing than people doing camera tests and smaller personal projects in their backyard.

Why? You'd have a weapon in your hands… just fire back. ;)
You guys keep making my point. I don't wanna be on the receiving end of these jokes that will just go on over and over again. At what point will all this devalue what the camera can do? IMHO if there's even a chance of that, RED needs to consider the side effects on the naming. People that are already against RED will have a field day, pollute the airwaves with these kind of jokes and believe me or not, that will influence, even if just marginally, the decision makers against RED.

Simple solution for those who fear they will be identified as war mongers if their camera is called weapon... RED could offer an option to write the name in Conic Sans or some other ridiculous font. As long as it is not in IMPACT BOLD it should not raise eyebrows on set or in the general public.

RED WEAPON - the name

Since it keeps coming up in all the wrong places (distracting), perhaps folks can voice their opinions about the name in this thread?

I realize it may step on some sensitive toes - and I am not advocating a full out flame war (oops, one of those words -lol) but there does seem to be interest in expressing opinions.

I won't take it personally if the mods decide to terminate this but, at least it might take the discussion out of the other threads.

Peace.

FWIW - i just started a thread to discuss the name. Surprised no one has done it yet. It seemed better to have this discussion be separate from the actual information about the product.

My personal take on it...

Im sure RED has heard the collective concerns. Also...one thing they are good at and take very seriously is the branding of their products. The best you can do is raise their awareness and let them make the best decision about what to call it. I see both points of view. Honestly though... say your peace and leave it in their hands. They will ulitmately make the call they prefer.
If if I had an idea to offer... I'd say make a contest. Take submissions and Jim decides the winner. The winner could get a free tactical cage or something. It would be a fun way to collaborate.

Perhaps a solution could be to offer a non-engraved/emblem version?

The very thoughtful Bob Gundu strikes again..as always!

My suggestion would have 'RED' branding engraved on camera leaving owner option to include 'Weapon' at time of order. Good thing is they normally brand on a module so perhaps would not be difficult to run a line without name for concerned customers.

Before the serenity of 'shooting' professional sports (LOL) I've had my bout with combat, conflict , bullets and threat of all types. Sorry, I've been on precipice of death on a few occasions while working projects outside USA; naming on a camera not among principle concerns.

But then again I consider myself lucky that military soldiers decided it was never the day to meet 'My Maker.'

Only to think I would have never known of the 'Milk Girls' RED footage or any of this wonderful tech we have today

The name is beyond stupid and juvenile.

Shame. Probably a great product. It's like the celeb baby's that end up being called Turnip or Crotch Stain. Red Turnip was probably the second choice.

Hope the dope wears off and weapon is looked at again.

...only if they are open to new ideas. Totally their call.
