  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED vs. SI 2K

you can find exposure test on the SI 2k over at http://www.cinematography.net look under comparitive test

they also have very early Red test (nov 2006) that are no longer valid ...

back in January, Red 103 was used on a test that included the SI 2k mini ..
at that time Red had build 12 .... i never did see the final outs/evaluation of the 3 camera's ( 3rd was cineAlta 900) ...
just based on what i saw on the set the SI 2k mini had very good under & over ... based on what i saw that day shooting 2k vs. 2k vs HD i'd say the SI had the upper hand shooting test charts back in Jan...
bottom line: the Red is a 4k camera - that is what it does best and Red 4k test charts back then were by far the BEST of the group ( red 2k , SI 2k mini , cineAlta 900) ...

Both have their place but which is

Both have their place but which is

Both have their place and certainly each has its advantages. If I had the cash I would have both. Considering their is and was a lot of TV shot on super 16 the SI2K would work great encompassing the same depth of field. More flexibility about having your focus dead on. The Red has its advantages too going the other way. I would like to see more work shot on the SI2K in the last few months to get a better idea of what it can do though.

Peace Out

I still keep my options open for both camera's, where I think the worksflow for SI-2K is much easyer and less time consuming.
For European users there's the advantage that SI-2K can be serviced in Munich. Jim Jannard stated recently there will come a service center in Europe for Red which I find reassuring for service.
I must say that despite good tests I have not seen that great material on the Silicon Imaging website as I've seen on Red. Almost seems that SI-2K is a little careless.... there should be more in the camera than I've seen sofar.
Compliment for the Redusers on this.
Problem with Red remains the workflow. I visit Reduser really a lot, and still it seems impossible to follow everything neccesary.
Money is an issue also. SI-2K seems more expensive. But when you count everything you'll need besides a basic Red and FCP or Adobe you might end more expensive with Red.

Both RED and SI-2K are fantastic cameras.

SI-2K does all their own testing and debugging and brain storming. Jim , on the other hand lets million fanboys to buy equipment still in development and do beta testing at own expense and free brainstorming on this website. Amazing business idea.

It is very sad that SI-2K do not have the business savvy of Jim or the seed money to develop and market the product.
I have to say Jim is an incredibly lucky man. Neither Sony nor Panasonic has any intention of bringing out any Cameras to compete with RED in the near future. SI-2K would not notice an opportunity even if it is thrust into its mouth.

Beijing Olympic Broadcasting has a fantastic setup. You have seen the results on your own TVs. They use many cameras including SI-2K; but do most of the work on Sony equipment. For mission critical work, (when their reputation and livelihood are on the line) professionals still rely on Sony.
