  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED vs. DVX andromeda vs. HVX200 vs. XTi

to crazy

to crazy

when matt, denis and myself did these test it was not a comparison, we new that red would be the "best" it was actually a privilege to have a RED there, it was very exciting to shoot on. Someone trying to say that a red can be put together as a mod is absolutely crazy and stupid. If you have ever seen a red you would not have said that it is a pro camera and the work flow is not that bad, its pretty simple, and pretty fast considering the kind of footage you are working with its not DV. These Test's were done for all the guys who want a red they can now have a comparison to cameras that they might have now in hopes of getting a red in the future.

There's an awful lot of proprietary hardware and software in a RED One. To think otherwise probably means you've not built a Digital Cinema camera before. That's not something I'd done before being involved in RED, and it's not anything like you'd think. There are so many details that make it more complex than you imagine, and I'm not just saying this. You can't just go and buy a sensor that performs like Mysterium off the shelf. A lot of the sensors on the web link above do 4k, but at what, 5fps. That's a bit short of 60fps never mind 24fps.

And REDCODE compression is rather unique. You won't find anything quite like it elsewhere. People think they know about it, but quite frankly, they don't. There's an awful lot that goes into it that you just don't see, but is utterly necessary. The devil is in the detail.

Of course, if it's easy to put together parts and make a camera, the market is always open for "better and cheaper". I welcome new members to the 4k+ club.

Graeme

A digital cinema camera does not have to be 4k or 5k. RED just got lucky in getting a deal with a sensor vendor who happens to have a 4k 60 fps, which is not listed there for obvious reasons. if i were to put together a native 1920x1080 sensor which records on cineform RAW and have a PL mount to take a S4 cooke lens,is it not a digital cinema camera? or is it? remember,F900,F950,F35 and F23 is a 1920x1080 camera which did starwars ,cloverfield and speedracer.

"There's an awful lot of proprietary hardware and software in a RED One"

but all those awful lot of proprietary hardware and software are not so important piece of part that will make a digital cinema camera. if the sensor vendor didn't have enough sensor in assembly line, you don't have a camera to deliver. and that explains the delayed delivery schedule for RED one since last year.

A Mod camera company and a REAL camera company has differences. RED is more to a Mod, DIY sort of company. But,hey.... i would buy a RED ONE if i got the cash, not because it delivers pristine 4k footage, but because of the hype and coolness factor. like the iphone. its cool to have a gadget like RED as a personal collection. but if i want to make a movie and the producer got the cash, i would shoot film in panavision or digital in F23 any given day.

(and i don't have connections with S**y or whatever company)

" RED is more to a Mod, DIY sort of company. " No. That's not correct at all. You really have no idea what is inside a RED, or how it works. This conversation is just getting silly.

RED just got lucky

Yeah, the zillions of iterations of hardware and software (and probably the custom sensor design too) were pretty "lucky" all right. Not to mention all the other logistics of running a real business.

Lucky for everyone who reserved a RED.

Jim was walking down the street one day and a whole company dropped in his lap. How lucky.

It will be impossible to find logic where there is none. Though being delusional has it's benefits, imagine if you walked around knowing you were right 100% of the time.

skywalker1 has obviousley not shot with any of the cameras and if he had shot with Sony Panavision and Red he would understand why RED realy is something special.

If he thinks it's so easy to DIY or start up his own company he should go do it.
Starting a company is SO EASY and RISK FREE.
His tone reminds me of the hitchiker in "Something about Mary" who's got it all figured out and is going to start up the "6 minute abs" comppany.

This thread is a waste of Reduser space.

nothing personal here. sure i've never shoot sony panavision or red but i'm very sure there's no dead pixel in sony/panavision.

but thats not what i'm talking about here.

the thing is,the comparison itself is a shame and disrespect to RED Owners. as a prospective buyer i would like to see some comparison on different and shit lot of kodak or fuji film emulsion under different lighting condition . than i would be confident in investing RED One, which indeed a shit lot of money to invest in. and after i made the investment (being a RED One camera owner) i don't want some champ from a garage doing a test side by side with a DVX 'Andro' or off the shelf HVX200 and say the RED's footage's are 'just' better than the comparisons. and i also don't want some chap who's reading shit lot of details about digital cinema camera to tell me step by step how to build a camera and tell its easy to start a company like RED. (like what i did)

i know you are going to end this thread, but before that answer my question.

WHY did no one have a comparison on RED One and a camera phone or a DV camera? because a fool could understand that the difference will be million or zillion miles away. its a no brainer. so why a comparison on HVX200 or some mod camera should either? WHY? Answer me.

While freedom of speech is a good thing,

I think one needs to back his clamorous statements with hard proof, in-depth comparisons and competent analysis.

Otherwise, he is in danger of looking ridiculous.

And yeah, I was Caius Julius Caesar in my previous life.

What, you don't believe me?!!

Just because... now that we got that resolved get back on the meds.

"and the most important step is this.... i mean THIS.

That's just a cheap shot... :)

Is this Mr. Rubio himself?

well,if you had to say it.

sony doesn't go around telling people and convincing them that they are REAL camera company and not a mod,DIY company, even if some guy accuse them that they are. neither do panasonic or JVC.

well thats why it's taking so much time to figure out what is working and what is not. it took months to even discover that there is such thing as strobing effect, heat sink problems, dead pixels, codec error, random shout downs, blank redcine outputs and many more problems in RED.

and all this basic errors and problems are discovered by the user itself not the RED. A real camera company would have tested it million times and posted do's and don't in their manual when they are releasing the cameras.

it's more like jim was reading DVX Forum one day and the whole idea of DIY camera company just dropped in his lap.

i already did. can't you click on the links that i've posted? that is a real hard evidence. what more do you need from me to back my claims that RED is a DIY camera company? logistical, customer service wise it is real operation like any other company. but i'm not taking about that. i'm taking about how the camera is being made and developed. it's Mod/DIY. like no other.

and don't post cheap replies like 'sky1walker' is this and he's that. and he does not have brain or what so ever. You want to argue, argue with facts and figures like what i did. tell me something that i didn't know. and no one have yet to answer my question.

the fact and figures are on the website if you care to read.

The reason why no one is taking you seriously is due to a simple fact that you don't know what's inside RED and you only think you do. You somehow figured it is that and went on ranting to everyone. You're just taking guesses and turning them into "facts". The whole thing is a joke. First you're going on how HVX with andro would kick RED's ass then you insult DVX Andro by putting it together into same category as iPhone.

The whole thing is a joke, you're ranting about things you don't know.

The other thing you should be aware of is that people with no money constantly blame rich people for being "lucky". You should be aware of the fact that your inability to make money does not reflect on folks who can.

Reel-stream as a company/idea was sold to an unnamed company earlier this year who in turn buried the tech, and also hired the owner.

Only Chris Nuzzaco knows which company it is.

Just a correction, I DON'T know who bought the technology.

I DO know where Juan is now working, but I promised to keep it private several months ago.

Hey Sky1walker, I'd like to know more about your DIY theory. In an effort to build goodwill and credibility with the community, tell us your real name and what city you live in.

Screw that, he can just build us a camera like RED and sell it for less and we'll buy it. Until then... someone should just close this thread IMHO.

You know what? Red really isn't a REAL camera company, but they're definitely not a Mod company. They're something new entirely. They're a Camera Company that (unlike Sony and JVC) listens to its consumers. If you were to e-mail Sony and say "Hey, can you up the resolution on your cameras and make it affordable," they would ignore the e-mail entirely. Red will say "Hey, we'll work on it and give you the best camera we can make."
