  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED vs. DVX andromeda vs. HVX200 vs. XTi

How so Sky1walker?

I'm not trying to be confrontational, im just wondering how a camera hack on an HVX200 could hold up to, well, any single aspect of the RED?

in a 2k resolution, definitely yes. Don't talk about 4k @ 35Mb, because it will be obsolete when Epic or REDTWO(sensor upgrade) comes to the gameplay. anyway you can't even use the 4k footage with so many dead pixels on it

RED ONE itself is a hack. Buy a DSLR sensor from a vendor, and DIY the camera body and firmware.

From a price/ performance point of view, an 'Andro' HVX200 or EX1 is way better that a RED,period.

Sky1Walker - what planet are you from?

Matthew Bennett. Thanks for these tests. Looks great.

What the 'f'?

I was there

I was there

I was at the "test" with Bennett, and after seeing all the cameras and seeing the footage not the screen grabs I can say that Red is many many miles ahead of all those cameras as it should me the lens alone on the red is makes a huge difference, and the amount of detail the RED can resolve if unbelievable. I personally can't get a RED right now but after seeing the raw work flow and resolution that the RED can get, it make me very excited about getting scarlet, and maybe a RED one day. In a pro environment the andromed in my opinion is unusable. You can get great images but the workflow is very uncomfortable you always have to be attached to a computer, also no lens options and to get a clean image you need way to much light, way to much. Anyways just wanted to say that a 2k Andromeda would be nowhere close to a RED, period.

Hey, after reading this post I was inspired so I went ahead and picked a DSLR sensor from a vendor and a screwdriver set from Rona and a cardboard box from Uhaul (beta camera body).

Though now that I have all this high tech equipment, I am not sure as to how I DIY this together. Please help

p.s. me thinks you've been hitting the Force a bit much lately. I am sure 9 out of 10 doctors would agree that you should layoff off it for awhile.

DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND! Red is doing a great job on offering indie filmmaker a mean to capture good quality footage's. but with so many bugs and complains about the workflow and real world operation, i begin to think that a SI2k mini kind of workflow is acceptable, hence my believes in 'Andro' type of cameras. The bottom line is, the search is still on,for a affordable, WORKING Digital Cinema Camera (with audio) that can deliver a theatrical 35mm print (when transfered) with no problem what so ever. I don't care it's HD,2k,3k,4k or 5k. i just want to make my god dame movie!

now the force relies heavily on one company.

May the force be with you, ikonoskop.

As I expected, the answer is "alpha centauri".

I just wanted to say that after replacing my Red's CF module: the Red CF module isn't some off-the-shelf CF SATA adapter card- Its actually RED branded right on the silicon.

Its easy to think that a company that started just a few years ago grabbed some parts and built a DIY cinema camera in a garage. All though I used to think that, this is not the case, they have the talent, they have the drive, and they have the money to build a camera from the ground up- and thats exactly what they did.

There's an awful lot of proprietary hardware and software in a RED One. To think otherwise probably means you've not built a Digital Cinema camera before. That's not something I'd done before being involved in RED, and it's not anything like you'd think. There are so many details that make it more complex than you imagine, and I'm not just saying this. You can't just go and buy a sensor that performs like Mysterium off the shelf. A lot of the sensors on the web link above do 4k, but at what, 5fps. That's a bit short of 60fps never mind 24fps.

And REDCODE compression is rather unique. You won't find anything quite like it elsewhere. People think they know about it, but quite frankly, they don't. There's an awful lot that goes into it that you just don't see, but is utterly necessary. The devil is in the detail.

Of course, if it's easy to put together parts and make a camera, the market is always open for "better and cheaper". I welcome new members to the 4k+ club.

That's just a cheap shot... :)

Is this Mr. Rubio himself?

Matthew, thank you for your tests and time... greatly appreciated.

I also want you to know that I really enjoyed the trailer for "Model". I hope you let us all know when that is done and how we can watch it.

Lastly... what a beautiful space, you could shoot that with pixelvision and I would still dig it.

Cheers,

Andrew
