  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red vs. Alexa

Definitely interesting.

Shame that we don't get to see HD, but it wouldn't make much difference anyway, it would be better to check out stills.

I must say that on the indoor shot the Alexa reacts in a much more pleasing way to this base grade they are doing. I don't say as a disbelief in RED, but if they used REDColor/REDGamma I'd lobby for a more natural color response like shown in the Alexa examples.

But in the outdoor shots the RED is more pleasing. It's also weird how flat the skin tones look in Alexa shots, with little gradation.

But well... I won't make any judgements out of a heavily compressed MP4.

It also seems like they applied the same grade for both images instead of trying to make them match. RED grade is way too contrasty with hot highlights.

Grabs:

Look at the guy's face on the ALEXA's first shot. There are no fine details on the skin and his face looks like pancake ! Color correction is very bad !!!

This test shows NOTHING !!!

People can get only confused and get wrong conclusions!

Alexa can't beat R1-MX in many ways, with EPIC shouldn't be compared at all.

Maybe it's better to compare it with Scarlet 8X or S35...

Or it's even better to compare Alexa with its 1080p league: 5D, 7D, Varicam V2, Genesis, F35,...

The brand new versions of all those cameras are coming up this Fall.

For Alexa that is actually still not 100% finished but in the meantime shipped camera the days are already numbered.

Only for sort of DP "psycho" Alexa have a strong impact and a great value but for more others it is just one more HD camera on the market and not more...

It's important to stay real here on this issue and not jump in a kind of the old camera brand hype...

One more to say that Alexa can't beat even 5D in skinniness,

also it has a pretty high price, it's heavy, it has a low resolution.

snip:

it has a low resolution.

I think it is unfair, and a little silly, to say a camera that is clearly greater than the industry standard 2K is "low" resolution.

"Lower" than R1, yes - "low", no.

Here's another test.

Of course some of these tests are hampered by youtube's compression but
it's still interesting.
I expect more of these to pop up in the coming weeks.

There will be more tests.
Some will even be documented and in such a way that you can download the raw frames...

After reading your thorough posts on RED workflow I do look forward to the tests you're expected to conduct between R1-MX and Alexa.
