  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red volt dosen't want to lock in Side Handle

Hi,

Does anyone have trouble putting in the Redvolt in the Side Handle? When I read the manual there's supposed to be a click but I'm not hearing it. Most of the time the inside lock( the red one) doesn't really latch on. Am I just doing it wrong or did I get a lemon of an epic?

Same problem here. Locking mechanism inside Side Handle can not hold pressure of spring-loaded battery.
 
No trouble getting the battery to lock in initially, but when changing out a hot battery for a fresh cold one, sometimes I have to let things cool down before the locking mechanism will catch. I'm just guessing that the plastic catch becomes less rigid when hot.
 
It may be a case of the battery casing expanding in the heat, or it could be that you are inserting it differently and it is not seated properly. For example; I frequently insert the first battery during prep with the camera in my lap, but subsequent battery changes happen on sticks and that changes everything.
 
Make sure you don't have any tape or stickers on the battery

To answer your second question, there are no lemon Epics. Epic is 99 and 44/100ths percent pure. Epics are Ivory!
 
Same problem here. Just need to be fast, and slam that door, before the battery pops out. :)

Although I can see, that there's a metal spring pressing on the plastic lock. Maybe you can bend that spring, so that it's tighter. But I´m not gonna bend mine.
 
Open an RMA and send it back to RED. Mine returned in just a few days and works perfectly now. Excellent customer service on RED's part.
 
Ivan is correct in the other thread. There is a flat piece of spring steel behind the red plastic retainer. The design is not a bad idea but if the steel piece didn't get heat treated properly, it is only a matter of time before it loses its shape memory. It should be quenched and tempered so it can be bent over and over, holding its shape without cracking. You could bend it to apply more down force and it will work fine again but I don't know for how long if it truly was made "out of spec". I used to run a metallurgical lab and have seen this before.
