Well, I'm still trying to get the Scarlet set up, and today, for the first time, I tried a RedVolt Battery inside the SSD Side Handle. Up until now, I've been using the AC Adapter and RedBricks for power, and they both work fine.

For some reason, the camera does NOT register that there is a RedVolt Battery inside the handle. The red ready light does NOT glow.

Why is this?

Is there a menu setting that will allow ANY power source to work?

The batteries I bought used and they charged up fine and indicate a full charge. The Side Handle is new from Red.

I'd appreciate any help in figuring this out so we can shoot with the RedVolt Batteries in the field.

Thanks much.

Should just "work"

Can you put a voltmeter across the terminals to check it IS actually charged?
They also need pushing in firmly and the red catch inside clicks. Does all that happen?
Got anyone else's Redvoltas you can try?

The guys at Red Support helped me out.

What I did was to unscrew the handle, and in the process the red indicator light came on. Screw it back down and now it works.

Go figure!

;)

Thanks.

Man George, you are not having good luck in the transition from the RedOne to the Scarlet. Good luck with the rest of the transition. Good to know the community and support are always there for you.

Well Louis,

It's probably because some of the components are new while others are used. We just could not afford a 100% new package. If we had, we'd be selling pencils on the street corners right now. ;)

What we're facing now, is a way to lighten the Scarlet camera even more than it is. It is certainly a huge improvement over the Red-One in that area, but it's still not light enough for our needs in the field.

What I'm thinking of doing, is to get a Red Pro 7" LCD because it won't need a separate battery, and eliminating the Original Red EVF. And, in using only RedVolts to power it and no bottom support, that should lighten it up nicely for the fly-throughs we want to do, etc, etc.

Thanks for your comments.

Take care,

.

I'd say your experience thus far as been very atypical.

One thing I always do in situations like this is to first assume I have done it wrong when something doesn't work, and un-do and re-do it even more carefully, just to make sure. This often catches little things.

I'd also recommend reading the manual fairly thoroughly becuase an awful lot of details can be missed if you try to "wing it."

I agree 100% Terry.

My REDvolts are very very hot after shooting or been fully used? Any reason why? I'm scared to put them on the charger being so hot.

Hi Bob,

Not sure how the 7" monitor would save weight over the original 5"? Plus I think the 5" would use less power as those little redvolts don't last very long. I'd love to see some of you new work with the scarlet, if it is anything like what you have done in film I'm sure it is awesome.

Yes they will be hot. They should be fine to charge, but sometimes the lights on the charger will flash orange and red, so let them cool a little and try again.

Thanks. I'll let them cool for a bit. They are damm hot.

My RedVolts consistently will refuse to recharge when hot. It might be a bug, or there might actually be a protection mechanism, since the recharge process itself generates heat. In any event, if you need a light setup for extended runs, you always need to have enough RedVolts and chargers to ensure you can round robin them through the cool off and recharge cycle.

I got my Scarlet back in Nov and have been using used and new parts along the way.

I guess Im one of the few lucky ones that didnt run into anything critical e.g. batteries and boot-up issues.

I was a little hesitant about buying into RED and purchasing used gear.

I am all for it and thanks to REDUSER, to date Ive saved almost 15% on my gear list.

I keep a tab on what I buy and how much I saved.

Ive lived off four RVs for a few months but with the new addition of the RED BRICKs and BATTERY PLATE/DSMC TACTICAL PLATE combo, I feel so secure with my power options ;)
