Hello all,

We're about to be awarded post on a commercial that they're "going to shoot with RED". That's as much as I know as of right now. We will probably want to give offline editor SD files at 24fps (DV50 perhaps), and we will finish in 1080 4:2:2

I've gone through thread upon thread and it seems a nominal workflow doesn't exists. would LOVE some tips!

1) Are there any test RED files that I can download and use with Redcine/FCP/whatever. This will probably be the easiest way to solve my confusion.

2) Would I generate proxies, compressor them down to SD for editing, and go back to RedCine at full quality downconvert to 1080 for our final selects? I imagine we'll have 3 or 4 hours of footage for a :30 commercial... So we need a speedy workflow upfront

3) Is there any special formatting on RED harddrives? Seems the 1st order of business is a clone of the RED data

thanks in advance!

1) redrelay for footage
get quicktime plugin
and fcp plugin from red/support
dont use QT 7.4 , use 7.3
Get RED ALERT
and REDCINE from red/Support
2) generate Proxies with Red Alert, your sound will be included

3) Set your FCP Timeline to unlimited RT and Pro Res
edit
4)Export FCP XML
5)use Ian blooms RED TRIP (search for it, you will owe him his favorite beer and donate him your next baby) its a FCP XML to REDCINE XML translator
6)Load all your redfootage into redcine, load redcine XML,
7) Export Pro Res HQ
8)relink in FCP
and the Rest will follow

Redrelay = perfect. I'll probably be able to sort this out in a jiffy. Looking forward to seeing a whole RED project come in the door

Someone should do a workflow tutorial video out of this. That would be spectacular!

Aneitz,

Where are you?

I'm in Venice, Lucas.

It seems the biggest problem right now is providing my offline editor with something that's not Proxies - ideally 720x480 quicktimes as their cutting station is older and not rigged for HD. RED dailies come in, I process them, and hand the editor a FW drive with his media. Sometimes editors are terrible with new formats and it's easier on all of us to not throw them curveballs.

Is there any batch processing available in Red Alert? Seems like I need to slog through 1 clip at a time. Or perhaps RedCine (which I had working, but now seems to crash every time I launch....)

RedAlert also forces me into ProRes for SD (whcih is fine, but I'd also like a DV or DV50 option). Not a big deal, but DV resolution seems the gold standard for offline editing.

But I'm very impressed with image quality so far. Totally stoked on this camera and want to get some indi feature films rocking on it. Currently working on a eco-adventure piece that's all HVX and P2... it looks, well, it looks like nice video.

I've come to the conclusion: it just takes time.

Take proxies from Red Alert, drop into Compressor, let er rip. Drink some coffee, wait, put brandy in coffee, laugh. Bam, quicktime dailies are ready for edit.

Have you actually tested this workflow or was it learned on reduser?

Thanks and greatings from Switzerland

Patrick

workflow works

workflow works

We've been using this workflow since Ian put out his first xml conversion droplet, and it works very well for us. But something more intergrated with Redcine would be preferable of course.

We don't even touch Redcine until the proxy edit is complete.

If you have workflow questions i will help you

but there are more workflows for 1080p...not just this one.
----edit:this workflow is not rocket science :)
