Red USER Rant...

Status
Not open for further replies.
I finally gave up requesting a owners-only REAL real-names section on RedUser, but perhaps the powers will take a fresh look at it.

Can anyone seriously deny that there is a very high noise to signal ratio here? I would certainly enjoy a section of the forum, open to being read by all, but limited to posts by real owners with real identities.

I know this omits valuable posts from experienced Red users who are not owners; there may be a way to accept them as members.

Good shooting and best regards to all,

Leo

I may be off base here, but I think the real problem at the moment is people are impatient and they like the people here, but there isn't a whole lot to talk about yet. EVERYONE is eagerly anticipating the arrival of their EPIC or SCARLET and from what I have seen, a lot of the noise is about speculation on features, dates, pricing.

Once these are all in the wild, you can GUARANTEE the quantity of useful posts are going to go through the roof.

The forum is fine as is, the users need to clean up their act. A user only thread, seriously? I have never worked with a red but I have plenty of production experience, am I not allowed to contribute? By creating such a thread, we only contribute to the appearance that we are all stuck up fanboys, also, many of these negative opinions and comments come from red owners. The only thing a closed owners thread would do would keep prospective customers out and keep the fanboy comments in.

I can see the comments on dvxuser and cinema5d now: "Hey, you know they started a red owner only section on reduser? Wow, what a bunch of tools, first they put us down because we shoot with what they call line-skipping toys and now they won't let us view their threads. I would seriously join if there were not three or four threads a day bashing DSLR's." Our actions on this thread do affect red as a company so if you really care about red and it's products, don't make an ass out of yourself and this forum.

I said it would be "too bad if"...... What I meant was that if the only way to keep some civility here between posters was to go to a user only format, that would be terrible. I was "NOT" actually suggesting it.

Guess I should watch my words. Suffice to say that the best solution would be individuals acting professionally and respecting Big Jim's wishes.

If the reduser forum starts getting heavy about yanking threads to keep it clean around here, that would be "too bad" too.

I disagree strongly.

Few of us are "fanboys;" and RedUser is the primary way to ask questions and get immediate help.

A users section does nothing to existing RedUser and miscreants may continue to clutter the site.

Lastly, if you've never worked with a Red, your contributions are probably better suited to other kinds of professional sites, such as cinematography, lighting, etc.

Good shooting a best regards,

Leo

No doubt, signal:noise is high but apparently Jim still finds an open public forum to be well suited to his purposes. Consider the amount of time that he and his staff must spend reviewing and responding to comments here and ask yourself Why does he bother? It isn't just to give us a place to bullshit.

For better or worse this is still public, and some people are bigger jackasses than others. On the day that Jim determines that this is no longer of value to Red, you can be sure he will change course. For now I enjoy it for what it is with my personal filter on. It's still lower noise than many other similar forums.

SECTION!!!
Get it? A section! Not abandoning the whole works, just adding an owners-only, real-names with bio, SECTION.

Honestly how is this not working now? I see people ask serious questions in the appropriate sections and they get answered quickly. Most of the 'noise' happens in Off-Topic. You have the option of not reading Off-Topic. That's the point of having different forum categories because it DOES keep the noise down.

This has never seemed broken to me.

Leo, a significant portion of people on this site have never touched a Red One. I highly doubt they are going anywhere. Reduser serves not only as a place for useful information and problem solving but also as the primary means by which Red updates us on the progress of their upcoming products. When was the last time the red site was updated other than the recent Epic page which contains no new info. You want info on red, you go to reduser. This site, whether we like it or not, does reflect back on red as a company. Closing certain sections off does nothing to foster interest from future customers. Besides, if someone wants a tech question answered, they should ask red directly if they don't want clutter. There is a lot of misinformation out there, that is the nature of the internet.

I'm sorry but an owners only section sounds like a very bad idea and bad publicity for red. There is a big difference between members only and users only. The great thing about the internet is that it is free. What about red renters, they use red a lot, can they contribute?

A USER ONLY THREAD IS LIKE BUILDING A GATED COMMUNITY WITHIN A GATED COMMUNITY.

REDUSER is a free service. I can't speak for the moderators and runners of this board, but in my opinion, given the number of people who rent RED cameras ALL the time and the massive amount of overhead with adding and removing users from groups on a board (as I run a board also), it's not going to be practical or worth it in my opinion. This problem will be exacerbated when the Scarlets come out and the number of RED camera owners will probably 10x to 20x in no time.

If you seriously have that critical of a question, then I'd called RED personally for support.

Oh yea I get it Leo. But if you personally had a semi-private area to conduct your business, would you post in This section at all? My guess is that you and most of the upper 10% would not and as a result much of the valuable discussion would go along with it. Without that mixture I think much of the middle (I consider myself in there somewhere.) would quickly find it useless, and all that would be left is the garbage. I doubt that is of any use to Red, and soon the whole thing would dissappear.

Since I frequently play the asshole on this site, let me just lay it out for you guys:

#1 we all know the policy of other camera discussion on this forum. it doesn't belong here. why people feel the need to continually ignore this rule and discuss their dslr's here is beyond me. And, they almost never go well, b/c we've got some very emotional and rude members on this forum... some might call them fanboys in other circles...

There will NOT be anymore of letting these threads run 30 pages before they get locked down. Up until now there has been a lot of patience for people who continue to try to start up other camera discussions on this site. As of now, you can consider that leniency over. If I even think that people are intentionally ignoring our clear and simple request to take that discussion somewhere else, they will get an immediate vacation from this site. No questions asked. Every time someone starts an other camera thread on this site, you've got 30 pages of people showing their ass and acting stupid and it makes this entire community look bad, not just the people misbehaving. You, reduser, and RED. REDuser is becoming an increasingly bad example of forum etiquette. Which leads me to #2

#2 You guys have GOT to put a stop to all this emotional, personal bullshit on this site. I realize we are a passionate community... but come on.... the membership here can be so defensive and so rude to each other, it's ridiculous. We have a NO TOLERANCE policy for personal shit. The mods will start handing out vacations to ANYONE who can't behave in a more respectful and courteous manner on this site. I don't care if you are an early red one owner, a troll, or whatever. This is not just a problem with trolls, haters, etc. This is a problem with core members of this site as well... The level of disrespect for one another is... it's just got to stop. And, if you can't practice a bit of self-moderation, then bannings will continue until folks start to get the idea. Seriously not joking about this.

Passionate membership comes with the territory here, but it does not need to be at the expense of civil and productive discourse. This is the main reason why other camera discussion is forbidden. Done explaining the policy, and defending it. Read any of the previous threads and see perfect examples of why we no longer allow it. It doesn't just look bad on those involved. It looks bad on all of us. If folks are going to call themselves professionals, they should act more like it. We don't need people trying to stir up the pot by starting dslr threads here. And, we don't need people making the membership here look bad by acting so unprofessional and hateful in those threads either.

Passionate discussion does not = disrespect. Name calling is sooo 3rd grade people. discuss the content, not the posters

All the things I don't like about another particular forum, I see taking root over here... nu-uh...

I'm fine if some folks want to call me a nazi for a while, until we trim the noise and bad behavior on this site to a more manageable level. No tolerance for bad behavior. 2 week vacation.

You can sit here and debate the reasons all you want. Bottom line... there is an easy solution. Either the membership here can begin to practice a little self-moderation and recognize that they represent the whole of the community when they post, or we can start finding you other places to hang out.

There is a lot of very useful, productive discussion that takes place on these boards. Unfortunately, it seems the further we go, there is just as much noise, rudeness, blatant disregard for forum etiquitte, and disrespect for your fellow posters. And, it doesn't take a lot of the latter to essentially spoil an entire community.

<rant off> :)

Jason, can you please make this a sticky?

Great post Jason, i'm glad to see it. We need to keep Reduser to a higher standard for the good of all

I vote to make Jason's post a sticky as well, this crap really needs to come to an end.

Would be nice to add to the 'Click here if you agree to this to use this site' when new users join! :)

I think that is already there, people don't read it. It's right underneath the part about REAL NAMES in giant letters that they don't read when signing up.

When I was typing that, I had the same thought. As I have seen quite a few people sign up with non real names.
