  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Undercutters in NY-Day=$800

Undercutting is one thing, but locally $800day unfortunately seems to be the going rate for RED packages in town here.
Along the same lines I recently ran across a local ad on Craigslist for a REDOne package available for $300/day !! Scary stuff.
I can only assume it's some kid that got a camera for Christmas, or someone with no business sense who wants to make enemies in town :ranting2:

"undercutting" is not how money is made...are you sure you want to take this approach

that being said I will take some rental days at that rate! how about I get the camera for a 1 day week at your rate :) :) JK

FYI ours just went out for $1800 a day, camera package and tech so go figure... and then we got it again!....go figure some more...from the same client!! how about that!?!?

We are NOT in the rental business but sometimes why not when your asked?

I probably should of started this thread with "our goal is to pay off the camera, not to rent it forever. This not our main source of income. We our a production company, of DPs and Editors, not a rental house. Just wanted to know if anyone would be interested in renting that package for 800-900... But anyway thanks again for all the input I got from this thread...

Stick to your guns, Slimcorn. Remember how "angry" the guys at Sony and Panasonic were at Red for "undercutting" them? Maybe you shouldn't use the word "uncercut." But the spirit of competition doesn't favour artificially inflated markets. I'm glad Red "undercut" Varicam, or I wouldn't have such a great camera! :-)

People in this forum might be coming across as angry, but trust me, there are VERY helpful comments and advice in the prior posts. If you need advice on how to command the going rate, just ask, but don't try to build your rental business by not charging enough because you will fail. You need to factor in YOUR time, equipment depreciation, office space, repairs, maintenance, insurance, accounting (don't try it yourself) and most importantly TAXES. Take all those costs out and you will quickly realize that you might be better off waiting tables in the city.
