May seem like an old school question but which is better for run and gun? The 5 inch touch display or one of the bomb evf's? i only have experience with the touch display but have never used the evf. I hear its a pretty small fov. Thoughts?

From a pure run and gun perspective the 5" touch is the better option because you can more quickly change settings on the fly then with the EVF + side handle or remote. However if you think you are going to spend most of your time outside in broad daylight then it might be worth it to get the EVF instead.

get the new 7" its higher res

The 5" is not bright enough to use outdoors (sunny day anyway) without good shading, I use the EVF for that. It IS slower... but I keep thinking that if I just had my key mappings optimized and memorized it could be nearly as fast.

Thanks for your feedback! Does the size of the fov bother you? Seems small .

TVLogic 058W. i saw this at IBC. Thinking of pairing it with Foolcontrol/ipod/Offhollywood on my helix and for handheld. I do have the Odyessy 7q and love it, but this little guy would be much more compact. I love the new 7", but while it's light it still has a largish footprint.

5" touch with grid view finder is the winner for me. You can focus on it and have a solution for sunny exteriors. But don't point it to the sun it will burn your LCD.

The bomb is crap. The picture is to small and colors are off.

What do you mean by small? It shows the full camera fov. If you mean the virtual size of the image when using the EVF then I guess I've never had a problem with it... but I'm also used to staring at iPhone screens :) (before they decided to go mega huge like everyone else). The one thing I've noticed is that I'm not as aware of things going on around me when I use the EVF... so things happening off-camera aren't on my radar - not exactly sure why that is... just an observation.

I'd say rent one and try it out. I bought the Epic with both and later picked up the +1 module - it's the best of both worlds but not cheap.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I actually had the grid and it ruined my monitor so be SUPER careful!

Bomb oled isn't very good. As has been said, pucture is way to small for good focusing, and the colors/contrast are funky. If your not in a huge rush, I'd wait for the zacuto gratical releasing this fall. It's supposed to have a native red evf cable too. Much much better picture.

I prefer the Bomb OLED EVF. If in a spontaneous doc type situation, I keep both eyes open. Then if I see something important happening in my peripheral vision I can pan to it. EVF blacks used to be milky, but are now greatly improved with firmware updates. If I'm confined to LCD I have to wear reading glasses so EVF is better for focusing for me. Having both is best of both worlds though.

Copy that. The new firmware has made the Bomb OLED EVF waaaay better and focusing for me is fine with it and many others, who have rented my kit have all been happy.

Thank you very much

Is the firmware just a camera firmware upgrade or is it an actual upgrade to the EVF?

I'm one of those who decided not to upgrade to the OLED EVF for the simple reason that I didn't see the value in it over my LCOS version. I am not judging critical color on an EVF, but rather focus and composition. Having come from B/W monitors on color cameras, it just wasn't that big of a deal for me. Sure it'd be swell to have more accurate color, but it certainly didn't affect my shooting capability whatsoever. So I stuck with the original. If I were to buy new now, I'd save the $700.00 and still go with the LCOS, but that's just me.

Hi Mark,

That is the same ideation that makes me not jump to the Zacuto. I can readily see the reason you would go LCOS as well. Have the blacks, in that image improved significantly, with new firmware?

Having had the same experience, with the B/W monitors of lesser quality, by far than the LCOS. (OT) I feel the same way about the touch screens. There are merits to each that RED offers and I can imagine having a 5", 7" and 9" around, depending on application. Sure the 5" could be refreshed, etc. etc.. Just saying' the color image, especially in terms of blacks is way more pleasing and makes the OLED EVF look like a new piece, with new firmware.

Very difficult to select 5" or EVF, for me, but I nod towards the EVF-OLED, with Ussy-teck arm more often.
