  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Touch 5.0 not working after tightening screw on SSD module

I have a RED Epic MX. The 5.0 touch screen is displaying fine but the touch screen functionality is not working. The side buttons are not working either. The last time I shot was maybe a month ago and everything was fine. the only thing I think i did was I tightened a screw on the SSD module. it seemed loose and i just tightened it up. and then when i powered it on the touch screen wasn't working. There is picture. you just can't use the touch functionality. I already tried doing a hard reset and took the side ssd module off and put it back on several times.
I tested a different screen on the camera and got the same issue. I took the screen and put it on my red gemini and it works fine on the gemini. So i thought it was the cable or the ssd. Then i tested with different cables on the gemini and the cables are working fine. So i think i have isolated the problem to the SSD side module. I contacted RED support and they said they no longer support the RED epic mx. Wondering if anyone has any ideas about what could be causing the problem and what solutions may get the touch functionality back. thank you
 
I've got the same issue on my Epic M. I've figured out that this issue is related to the mainboard in my case. When the side ssd module buttons and touch are not working - the cam also doesn't read the temperature indicators correctly and the fans don't react to the actual temp, which can lead to overheating. In my case - I just reboot 2-3 times until the cam is loading with touch func and side ssd module buttons working.

Try rebooting several times. If doesn't help, try getting the cam a little warm-up time.

Is anyone doing DSMC1 TOUCH 7" repairs?
The LEMO port is acting up and is intermittent.

Is it not easier just to buy a new side module and screw it on yourself? You can get a 1.8" for chicken chips or a mini-mag for like $500~800.

Nah, don't think it'll help. I have a Scarlet MX and an Epic M and tried switching the side ssd modules - and the described problem is not related to the side ssd module.

There's a problem with the back screws overtightening (the four on the back wall where the redmote is docked) - if you overtighten them they will cause pressure on a chip that is cooling off this plate inside, and the cam will freak out with the native LCD loosing blue channel (will display everything that's blue - as grey, or the whole image will shift yellow), or even not see the card totally and the screen can go blank. But it's a totally different problem and as I've mentioned is caused by pressure on a chip under a back wall.

Oh sheet! That is good to know! I will avoid that like the Great Plague!
