  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red to Smoke

Output dpx from RedAlert (and Redcine). Adjust exposure and white balance, and leave the rest alone, go out 10bit dpx REDLog.

We took some of the stuff we shot Saturday into a flame by exporting DPX files out of RED Alert!. This worked fine but obviously a batch processing method will be preferred when that is released. We did this at the end of the day to see some of the stuff, but did not have time to process/transfer everything.

I'll be doing more with this this week and looking at the footage on a Barco projector soon too.

If I have read everything correctly I can export from ReAlert or Redcine using an EDL generated in FCP and I assume it can be with handles. Once that is done will I be able to conform on smoke or flame with the same EDL? Am I right in thinking all the EDL information is contained in the DPX files? Sorry for asking a simple question, I've been conforming from tape for so long!

Until we have a different grading solution (lustre, scratch) we are using smoke/flame for grading and online/effects. Provided we adjust exposure/wb natively in RedAlert what kind of grading latitude should we expect with the 10 log files? (compared with using an app that uses the native files like scratch). I realize there will be a hit, I am just trying to make my expectations realistic.

I'm looking forwards to seeing your tests Jeff as I know you will have the flame/smoke in mind for the finishing/effects.

Hey Jeff!

RED Alert can output one clip at a time. REDCINE has a batch processing method that can deliver DPX files... and SCRATCH does not need it because it can output to your Barco in realtime directly from R3D files.

Those are sorta the options. : )

When you go to import image there is no blue button/tab that allows you to select the bit depth? You should at least have 8 and 10 for an HD smoke. That's where you should find 12bit.

If you select a file to import on a Flame it will show you the native bit depth of that file in the lower right area. DPX out of RED Alert! are 10 bit. The blue boxes you are talking about would be in the resize options - which would not get you any additional bit depth beyond what was in the original DPX.

If you export TIFF they are 16 bit (I assume, I have not used tiffs really). Selecting this for import into flame will show you it is 16bit but as soon as it is imported it will be converted to 12 bits which is the max Flame/Smoke can deal with on the framestore currently.
