Hi,
So we will be editing our first feature film shot on red in AMC 3.5 . We have a SD mojo connected to the machine.
The Red footage is mix of 4K,2K (for slow motion) 24fps .

What is the simplest workflow for :

1. Offline edit in AMC 3.5
2. CC and conforming in Scratch.

Thks

I've done two features this way (although I changed to MC4 midstream).

I used MetaFuze to transcode the R3D files to DNxHD36 MXF files without sound. Sound was recorded separately, I synced up in Avid.

If you use MF 2.1.1 or later, you get MXF files with the correct timecode and the R3D filename as source tape name. Easy to make an EDL that way. Scratch reads that immediately and handles the R3D natively.

One caveat: the current release of MF does not handle the new Mysterium chip's color science correctly. There should be a new version on its way, but it's not yet available.

Alternatively, you could use RedCine-X or RocketCine-X, preferably with a Red Rocket card, which will accelerate the transcodes significantly (MetaFuze can use this card as well, but I cannot recommen its current implementation). All of these methods allow you to create Avid MXF files in DNxHD, which you can instantly work with in Avid, without the need to import anything.

You mention using a Mojo (I'm assuming the non-DX version), which is an SD device. MetaFuze and other applications will create HD files. If you want to use your Mojo or Mojo-SDI, simply flip your project format to SD, and there you go. If you flip the project format back to HD, you can export HD Quicktimes of your cuts, which you may use for screenings in HD, for instance.

Also note that on June 10th, Avid will release MC5, a reasonably priced upgrade if you're on 3.5 (395 USD). MC5 will have serious new features that will make all of this easier. It will allow you to open R3D folders over AMA, and instantly use the footage, or transcode to DNxHD within Media Composer (accelerated with the Rocket, if present).

Harcharan,

If you already own a SCRATCH, then the easiest (and fastest) way to generate DNxHD MXF for offline is... through SCRATCH!

With a RR card, you can render to MXF at realtime or greater.

Best,

Lucas
