Hi all!
I´m totally new to this and need some help.

Next week we are going to shoot a commercial with RED for the first time.
We are going to send the finished edit to a post house that will put 3d animation in and do the color grading.
Now, they want the edit to be delivered as dpx files.
I have never worked with dpx nor RED before so this is a complete jungle for me.
Can anyone explain the workflow and software i need?

Thank´s!

Is it being edited with avid or final cut?

There are a lot of tools to help generating dpx files from r3d files.
For music videos and commercials edited in final cut I usually use crimson workflow and redcine. Monkey extract looks cool for avid projects. haven't tried it though.

Monkey Extract is a fine tool for any size project. I would even recommend this for Final Cut users who are looking to avoid Redcine, as Monkey Extract can perform batch processing in a more elegant fashion. I am in the middle of using it to complete two music videos that were edited in Avid Media Composer.

PM and we can discuss specifics if you like.

Sorry, should have mentioned that i´m working in FCP.

I don´t know what Crimson is but is the workflow like this:

Final edit in FCP
Export or whatever to Crimson
export dpx from Crimson?

Can someone please recomend where I can find info and workflow for these tools?

crimsonworkflow.com, red.com/support, rubbermonkeysoftware.com

xml->crimson->redcine or xml/edl -> monkey extract

Since last month monkey extract can import xml's :-)

Hi all!

We are going to send the finished edit to a post house that will put 3d animation in and do the color grading.
Now, they want the edit to be delivered as dpx files.

Are they expecting an already conformed DPX sequence, or individual shots with handles and an EDL? If it's the latter, you can use some of the methods other posters are suggesting here, among others. If it's the former, you need a way of conforming the DPX's that are generated so that the post facility has a completed, final sequence. You also need to find out if they're expecting the files to be in log or in video gamma, and if it's log, whether they expect it to be Cineon log or another curve of your choice (I'd recommed looking at Redlog). If they are unfamiliar with dealing with Red footage, these terms might be meaningless to them, but all of these things will affect both the end product itself, and their ability to work with what you supply them with.

I guess that the files will be separate files with handles since they are doing the grading. I´m checking if it´s log or lin they want.

Where can I find info of the different RED apps?

what´s the difference, what to use and when?

Ok, so I´ve read that Color can export dpx files I guess I could use that.
But I also see in the whitepaper that color don´t support 16:9 aspect ratio.

The whitepaper mentions a few things as not tested. Color supports 16:9 just fine.

Color can even render transitions to DPX with "Gather Rendered Media".

Ok, if Color supports 16:9, how is that workflow?
Is it possible to export 2k dpx?

AFAIK, Color doesn't import 3K footage correctly. I believe it crops the image to less than 2K size, which is the reason I'm hesitant to use the workflow, yet.

Best,

These links might be of help too:

I have just rendered out my first sequence of DPX files from Color successfully. If you are not really at home yet in Color, this may save you from searching in the program:
In Color, look at the setup tab on the top left of the screen. This tab has several tabs in the bottom again (just above the timeline). One of them is Project Settings. Here you can set the render file type. Choose either DPX or Cineon. Now, when you are all done with your grading in Color, go to the render queue tab. Select all the clips you wish to render, press the button 'add selected' and 'start render'. Then finally, choose --> file -->gather rendered media, and you have a series of DPX files.

Yes, 3K is not really supported in FCP/Color, that's true. But 16:9 in 4K or 2K works fine (but 2K is quite soft).

Hi all!
Still thinking about my workflow.
Please comment on this:

Ingest as ProRes and edit in FCP
Export XML from FCP
Import XML into REDCine
Export dpx files from REDCine.
Deliver dpx to post house.

Is that the way to go?

I'm also struggling to get the DPX workflow.
We've just finished shooting a short with a LOT of vfx, I think more than half the shots will have to go through AfterEffects. What workflow do you guys recommend for that?

The vfx-aftereffects work will start before the edit starts, and the vfx shots will need to be replaced several times in FCP during the edit.

How do I work with the DPXs so that they end up right place in the end?
