  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Team - What causes this kind of invective?

RED usage

RED usage

5000 cameras and i still couldn't buy a blockbuster movie (or indie!) that was shot on RED and RELEASED ON DVD.

Release dates ... RED didn't ship any cameras until Sept last year...

5000 cameras and i still couldn't buy a blockbuster movie (or indie!) that was shot on RED and RELEASED ON DVD. i'm not a big fan of announcement and endorsement by RED that their cameras are being used by Peter Jackson and supposedly filming a nicolas cage movie. That strategy work for a sunglass company. but not for this highly creative industry.

my question is just one.

slumdog millionaire was shot in SI2K mini.......
if RED is really technically superior and 'could' deliver superior image, why it is not being used as a de facto camera in hollywood.... something wrong ????

Well, considering that the RED has been out there for just over a year, it's not surprising that you can't get a film yet on DVD. Unlike commercials or music videos, it takes time to post a movie. Slumdog Millonaire was shot a year ago and it's just now coming out. If you'd like to see the Nicolas Cage movie, then look at this (http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/knowing/)

You do realize that movies take time to shoot, right? Slumdog Millionaire started shooting in Sept. 07 at which point it was pretty difficult to get one's hands on a RED One. The first feature shot on RED (with prototypes, no less) was Soderbergh's Che, which was done in May, and has been playing festivals this summer and fall, and gets a release this Christmas, and Soderbergh works really fast.

It's been a little over a year since the camera's been released to the public. For such a new camera, its spread throughout the industry is pretty unprecedented. It's just that there's a lag between a camera being available and feature films being available (and even a bigger lag between that and the DVD release).

Also, Anthony Dod Mantle, who shot Slumdog Millionaire, picked the SI2K Mini primarily for its form factor, which allowed for quite a bit of flexible shooting. Also, he just finished shooting Lars Von Trier's Antichrist on RED, so it's not like he has a problem working with RED.

Akimoto...shimizitsu aragoto tora tora! godzilla in pain... hai!

afterthought: If any Americans of Japanese descent or Japanese of American descent, or any combination thereof, find my post offensive, GFOYS...(GoFallOnYourSword)

And a lot of producers and DPs are used with their tools... I'm sure Picasso would have hesitated going on a new production with spray cans after being so used and praised with brushes :) Not to mention lobbying and boycott, when you know Sony owns half the worlds distrib, prod and record companies... It's like Universal and Panasonic (which they own, or used to), all of universal channels and else used ONLY Panasonic gear... Whatever, people just have freedom to do and use whatever they like, and a lot of people start to like the Red a lot, a freakin' lot if you ask me! I have nothing against Sony, but they never were accessible for me as an owner and never gave me the freedom and power Red now gave me, so niet (no pun intended)...

Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

I think Red has potential as a high end professional camera, however, its price, which is its strength, is also its achilles heel. Red owners adore is price, but then gripe about the falling rental camera prices since the market is becoming swamped by its acceptance.

Just look on this forum how much derision is directed toward somebody who even thinks of renting a Red camera w/ some accessories for less than $500 a day. It will be difficult for the rental camera owners to themselves buy a cheap camera (in price, and not quality) and still expect exorbitant rental prices. That 1-3% rule of rental price may still be diluted more.

Joofa, good point. Where EVERYTHING changes forever, I believe, will be the point where RED opens a Rent-to-Own store:ohmy: :cold: :usd:

In my mind, at least, there is no visual-related company better positioned for the coming economy, be it deflationary or inflationary, or alternatively, both.... than the RED Digital Cinema company.

VALUE trumps all.

heh heh heh... as you mentioned we have heard the vaporware/scam comments many times before.. and coming from someone that works for Sony I would take those comments with a grain of salt.

The fact is that RED is doing real damage to the bottom line in some companies producing camera.
Just by looking what percentage of orders goes to RED in the renting houses may give you some indication.
Remember one order for RED is only 20-30K but the damage to the other company revenue is about 80-120K

Now I know why delivery department in RED is called Bomb Squad:-)

Hi,

I don't believe any company in the world makes net profit in the region of 80-120K per camera.

I heard today that one of our competitors has said that we now need venture capital to stay in business... another said that "Jannard is now bored with his toy and not really paying attention to the business anymore...".

Such kidders...

Reminds me of a quote by Lamar Hunt's father. Shortly after Lamar founded the American Football League, a reporter asked Mr. Hunt Sr. that since the newly formed AFL was loosing a million dollars a year, how long could his son sustain that sort of loss before quitting. Mr. Hunt reflected for a moment then told the reporter, "Oh, I don't know, I guess about a hundred years."

Well in response to the hollywood comment. By default "hollywood" is still shooting film. Its changing but... In any case for anyone saying red isn't being used here well, obviously you're not here. I personally have worked on A list features with name talent going red. Also a lot more things being shot that to be honest because people are busy working, you'll never know was shot on red, or any other digital cinema camera.

The biggest thing is its just a cool tool that has its limitations, but also its strengths. Use it for the right thing, and you can do some pretty damn cool things.

In regards to the sony comments well I've played with an F35, I'm really interested to see Red's response, as the F35's DNR is winning right now. So here's hoping.

I think that Goliath cant move as fast as David !

The Bank Job was shot on Arri D21, (the camera) which i believe available around october 2007.. i can buy the dvd now.... and thats a 2K camera...
my point is... you can do a LOT of things, in a year...

can i buy the CHE dvd anywhere? or it won't see the light of the day just like PJ's shot film? Offhollywood seems to be announcing that 6-7 indie shot film being (or done) shooting with RED since last year. Not one movie is available in DVD yet? what is wrong???

There is momentum associated with organizations. It is not easy to change things quickly. Remember, reputation is something that takes a long time to establish, and a really short time to tarnish! And of course there are big egos involved. Never underestimate ego that need to enforced at all costs.

As somebody who is familiar with on how to develop a high-end digital camera, and as an independent observer, who is not at all connected with Red, I give you my honest opinion, and that is Red has done good work. However, the product still has some issues and flaws that need to be addressed in the short term. As I mentioned before, Red has potential, and if used properly, it may turn out to be a formidable product.

The DVXuser fests have at least 2 shorts shot on the RED each time which are available for public download at the time of the fest. Some people pull them from the downloads after to hit the other fests but if you check in at the end of the contest every 3 months you can get them.
This link is still active.

"02" from the last fest was really good too but they took all links down to pimp it to other fests.

Hey, Jim, Jarred, Ted,

Was reading in the Sony Vegas forums, where I saw one of the moderators, in response to the upcoming Scarlet announcement, say this:
....

Speaking of vaporware. I bought Sony Vegas 6 some time ago. After reporting a couple of dozen serious bugs within the first week of usage they weren't willing to fix the damn thing, so I got a refund... :bleh:

Ouch.

Yeah, Vegas has its' occasional bug, but so does FCP. And as someone who goes back and forth from FCP to Vegas daily, I will always choose to work in Vegas over FCP any day. Things in Vegas that take a mouse click or two in FCP require a mouse click, three drop-down menus, a hop, skip and a jump. It's like editing in peanut butter, where editing in Vegas is like greased ball bearings; quick, efficient and intuitive. It's too bad so many people are sold on FCP...
