  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION

In reading some of these recent posts, it occurs to me that one of the most important things to have if you want to be in this business is the attention to detail. now jarred is a pretty important person around here, i would actually say short of jim THE most important person here and in terms of reduser...well, the most important. before complaining in a public forum, learn how to spell the bosses name...and for god sakes, the last 3 letters of his name could not be any easier, for all of us anyway...it's RED, not rad....

HA ha!! So true!!

Sorry asking this question again, probably silly, but since I forgot to ask about it at Red Day Vegas, I need to ask again, will the RED CF Reader work self powered when connected to a MBP via FW800?

Ketch. Its back a few pages and I cant find it, but YES, the CF card readers are like any others, FW/USB powered. No worries.

The BASE power station is mostly for eSata daisy chaining, SSD and/or when you are reading one CF and writing to another CF without a Macbook or PC.

So YES.

Part one of this is true.

Part two I do not believe to be true. The daisy chaining is for POWER only, there is only ONE eSata connector on each drive which will need to be attached individually to an ESATA controller, most likely on or attached to a computer of some sort.

This is true with the USB connection as well.

Firewire can be chained unless they've done something specifically that does not allow that, as there are two FW800 ports on each module.

There is NO mechanism to transfer data from one media to another with or without the base station. These DO NOT work autonomously from a computer. You will need a computer to transfer between modules as these will mount/show up as external devices just like other card readers or drive connectors.

Ok, yeah, i was wrong on the computer autonomy part, (you need a computer regardless, doH!) but I think you are confusing things with the eSata. You HAVE to have the BASE POWER station with eSata operation
and they indeed CAN be daisy chained. (See pic on first couple pages) "power" daisy chained, not multiplexed btw.

Hey, at least the thread is back on topic... now whats up with the FCC?
Anyone, anyone? Buehler?

Um - thats not what Jarred implies here:

Base Station eliminates power adapter coming out of each module so you only have one power wall wart coming out of the whole stack.

If you look closely, theres a +5v jack on each module. So if you dont mind a ton of wall warts, then you can go without the base station with eSATA. You'll just need each one connected to power individually.

Correct me if Im wrong, as then Id have to update my order.

Correct.. you can run each station off of it's wall wart ( that is included with each module ) if you would like.

Conrad, I meant "If" you want that clean sexy stackable look with the elegant cabling in the photo.

You dont have to buy the Power Station. Correct. ah Jarred beat me to it

Yes.. the base station is like a really nice power strip that does a better job at sending cleaner power to each module than separate wall warts does, and also is a solid foundation for the stack.

Its modular. .you don't need it if you don't want it, that is kinda the whole point of the modular system. Same as the CF module, or the 2.5" or 1.8" module.. you dont need to buy them if you don't need them :)

But for clarification, you are NOT daisy-chaining eSata. Only power is daisy chained. There is ONE eSata port on each module and so there would be no way to daisy chain eSata

(And I've never seen eSata daisychained either, outside of this product. From my googling, I don't think that is even possible. Just like USB does not daisy chain. It requires a hub for more than one device on a port.)

Missed.. thanks Tim.

Don't mean to nitpick as I severely want these. However, wouldn't it be quite possible... even a good idea. To simply get a $50 battery backup power strip and plug all these modules into that. Then plug that ONE power strip plug into your wall. No wart. And you have 2hrs of power. And save $200 dollars. Just an idea. Does the power module have battery backup? Would be awesome.

Just thought it'd be a good time to re-state my thoughts as they got lost back in the flame war. :P

Jarred,

Whoa! Nice lookin' prop. My only comment (which was mentioned before) is: it would make much more sense to have USB 3.0 and SATA 600. And who knows maybe Light Peak?!

I'm sure you guys have discussed it to death...

RED doesn't follow...it leads...

But Josh:

The base module consolidates everything into one power cord, so you can hook that into your UPS. Perhaps if you are shooting INT, or have plenty of power options, your idea is great. But if you are EXT, or in a field, on a boat, or some other ridiculous situation, being more mobile is key.

lol "I'm on a boat!" ;-)

If USB 3.0 worked on my mac right now.. we would already have USB 3.0 modules.

slackers.

I guess the reason Scarlet has yet to ship is because the Red team sits around the office all day smoking the reefer talking about cartoons eh?

That's the new REDSpliff module ;-)
