  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION

The 2.5" REDMAG RED STATION module will accept normal 2.5" bare drives, so you can put a bare drive in ( Spinning or SSD ) and use it as an external hard drive, to offload cards to or for storage, etc.

That's cool... so one could dump cf cards to an inexpensive spinning 2.5" drive using only the red station and it's appropriate modules?

Could we offload to two drives simultaneously using two 2.5" REDMAG modules, so we can have redundant backups on the fly?

There is a 1.8" REDMAG SSD card that will be released, that card will be used to record footage on camera via the 1.8" SSD Camera Module. The REDSTATION 1.8" Module to read that card will come out over the next few weeks.

Nice! But I would still need a PC/Mac driving this right?

Any chance at a "Red Control Station" that would allow offloading in the field without a computer? I'm thinking eSATA in ports for connection the CF or RedMag stations then FW/USB out to connect simple consumer external drives

Yeah we saw "RED MAG 128GB" and I think they were said to be based on 1.8" media. Makes sense with 64GB CF cards coming. 128GB could fit in a little larger form factor -- a 1.8" SSD. EDIT> and Jarred just cleared that up. :)

For those wondering about 2.5" capacities; If the module takes standard 2.5" HDDs, then we should have lots of choices. Currently 2.5" HDDs are up to 1TB @ 5400rpm in a 12.5mm thick form or 750GB @ 5400rpm in the compact 9.5mm form. 2.5" SSDs are readily available at 256GB. Higher capacities are starting to enter the market.

Other than potential RED MAG media, I don't know of anyone making "performance" 1.8" storage devices.

Yeah I just inquired about this, I think the ability to clone drives for backup will be sick. Data redundancy is great, and the Red Station could make that a quick and simple job.

So the 2.5" Mag is just an entry for either 1.8" SSD or external Hard drives? It is not in istelf a harddrive...I thought it would be like my NEXTO harddrive that has all sorts of card slots and you just pop in a CF and backup at the touch of a button...

As I'm understanding it, no, you still need a computer to drive these. Hopefully I am wrong!

The drive is 2.5" but it sits in a larger heat sync. If it is like the previous Velociraptor, then it has the SATA connectors in a non-standard location that can't be mounted in a hot swap bay.

Yeah it has a 3.5" heatsink. I don't know if it would work without it, or if Red will have to have a Red Mag 3.5" version.

Hi Stacey,

The good news is that they fixed that quite a while back. The new version has the connectors in the standard location. I've got one as the boot drives in my MacPro towers.

So if I understand this correctly, we'll be able to automatically write a second copy of everything that you are off-loading to a RAID? And this copy will be ready to hand-off/mail, allowing you to focus on the files getting onto the RAID safely. Correct?

You need a computer to use the RED STATION.. nothing happens automatically. When you load cards or drives into the station they show up as drives on your computer. You can use software to automate a backup workflow, but the station does not take the CF and dump it to a card all by itself.

Except mainstream laptop 2.5" drive thicknesses are 12.5mm and 9.5mm, and the 6Gbit interface speed doesnt make the ~100-150MBps drive go any faster than the 3Gbit interface. It's possible but unlikely RED will be supporting 15mm 2.5" enterprise-style drives if they are talking about 2.5" for SSDs.

So you either use the power adapters that come with the module, or you spend $250 on a base station? To save using a second power lead?

Or two more power leads. This is a big plus for a DIT cart. Three leads or one?

Base Station eliminates power adapter coming out of each module so you only have one power wall wart coming out of the whole stack.

Of course you can also use Bus Power over firewire if you want to power the CF Module all by itself. You dont want to do that though if you start daisy chaining things together over firewire.

I do get that its great to be using RED-endorsed readers with RED media, and that esata CF readers could be a big plus once bigger faster CF media comes out, but I'd rather have internal readers with internal cables and internal power rather than a multitude of bus cables and another power cable that doesnt securely lock. I can see that this would be a good option for standardizing the way laptop users download media, but im skeptical of using laptops for downloading RED media in general given their significant bus limitations and cable instability versus a workstation. I say this having just finished building my portable DIT workstation, of course :)

The big question in my mind is how this affects RED's support for media, as clearly they are getting more deeply involved in the way people download media from their camera(s), and I just hope this means they will be more involved in certifying third party media, rather than creating a single proprietary media workflow that really only works well with their cameras, their media, and their readers and only supporting workflows that use their products. I have not been that happy with their lack of support for third party media so far or their lack of transparency in terms of certifying or supporting 3rd party media. I'm just hoping I will be pleasantly surprised with all their new media support and that they wont only certify their own SSDs and mark them up 500%. I say that only with the most respect for RED, however, as I simply expect more from RED than I would from Sony or Panasonic.

Of course you can also use Bus Power over firewire if you want to power the CF Module all by itself.

Question: Can you bus power over firewire but use esata for the data connection? You mention powering the CF module all by itself over FW, but wouldnt FW bus power be enough for at least two CF readers or one 2.5" media reader, maybe more?

I tend not to trust bus power and avoid it whenever possible, but it is good to know what will work in those all too likely situations where it becomes necessary.

I see. Would it be possible and wise to dump simultaneously to a RAID and a 2.5"? The way I see it you are only reading it once and already making more copies, so it seems safer it that is possible.

Hi Jarred ! I'm sure your keeping an eye on the requests for the Station
I've made a list of the main requests for future models you might consider

USB 3,
Esata 6gps
Dual CF reader
Some form of interlocking power/ transfer connectors between modules
Power Supply and other connectors Locking feature
RED Enclosure for 2.5/ 1.8 SSD bare drives with the same connectors, drives can be easily transfered to post or for other purposes when the offload is complete

Please feel free to add anything I may have missed
