Hi,

Can anyone please tell me the main differences between the RED STATION REDMAG and the MINI version?

In the RED STORE, they say the RED STATION REDMAG brings with a lot of cables (eSTA, Firewire, USB, POWER adapter, etc) and in the mini version they don't say nothing...

Thanks

The 'mini' has an option for a USB 3.0 version, while the original RED STATION REDMAG is ESATA, FW800, and USB 2.0 only. You get can get the mini with either the USB 3+FW or the ESATA+FW ports. Also, with the original RED STATION, you can daisy chain power to other RED STATIONS (like the COMPACT FLASH and the REDMAG 2.5"), plus the RED STATION BASE (which is just for powering RED STATIONS in a chain configuration). That keeps a few AC plugs open and a couple less power cords running around. A little tidier that way.

We have RED STATION towers, daisy-chained together, and connected to Mac Pro's and PC's via ESATA in the studio. We use the tower for offloading REDMAGs, copying data onto removable SSD's (via the REDMAG 2.5"), and in the rare event someone hits us with a RED One Compact Flash card.

We use the RED STATION MINI for USB 3.0 for mobile DIT while transferring and shooting. Works great with the MacBook Pro w/ Retina. Very fast offloading while on set.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Rob,

If I buy the MINI will be able to use it with nothing else? does it bring power cable, firewire cable and USB cable?

Thanks

The MINI does not do power chaining like the regular RED STATIONS do. But if you're only using one RED STATION, that doesn't matter. While both MINI flavors come packed with FW800, you are going to have to pick which high-speed connection you'll get the most use out of; USB 3.0 or ESATA. See both options on this page (under "TYPE"):

The MINI comes with power cable, FW800 and either the USB 3.0 or the ESATA cable, depending on which type you choose. You're probably going to want USB 3.0.

You do not need the external power cable if you're running USB 3.0 REDMAGs, although RED warned you might need the external power if you're trying to offload from the 512 REDMAG because of the higher power requirement. So far, I haven't run into this problem but it's a good warning to have.

Good luck Humberto.

There was an email some time back telling people to NOT use the power supply with your USB3 Magreaders. I've stayed away from day one as they have always worked with bus power.

The 512 REDMAGs will not work on bus power alone. The external power supply is required.
