I saw the electrostatic discharge warning when I received my Red Station RedMag 1.8". I'm wondering just how sensitive is it? Is everyone chaining themselves up to a wrist strap when they plug their Red Station into their laptop out in the field? OR, is it OK to just use common sense and be careful (i.e. take off your static-prone sweater and ground yourself out before handling)?

I had the same on my CF reader. I just use common sense and things have been fine. I usually try to discharge myself by touching something metal as I'm sitting down to my station.

Have lots of experience with this, living in a dry Las Vegas climate and I've worked/lived in new offices and homes that seemed to be blistering with static charges. For a little while, I along with everything I owned was getting zapped left and right. So I took to fixing this before it cost me something big like a major computer component or vital data.

The solution is incredibly simple. Dilute some dish soap in a water bottle and then mist all of your baseboards, low walls, and most important carpets with a light spray. Next, use Static Guard spray around your closets and any carpet areas immediately around where you work the most. Don't overkill, a quick spray in the area does the trick.

That combination will eliminate almost all of the static problems in most houses and offices. Finally, to be sure you're always grounded, just tap the screws on the cover plate of any electrical outlet. I do this before accessing most memory cards or especially when moving around computer components. Super simple. Just tap the plate to discharge.

Nothing more to it than that.
