  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION MINI

Wish it was Thunderbolt...

Ordered.
But if any data transfer system needs a thunderbolt option its gotta be RED. Cut those offload times by half or more.

Agreed! I was expecting the next rev to have Thunderbolt.

Nice that it's smaller, but no Thunderbolt is a disappointment.

You cant get any faster than ESATA speed with SSD media...Thunderbolt offers nothing more than what we currently have for speed.

Can someone please give me the dimension and weight specs on the Mini? The Red station 1.8" is 1.48" x 5.33 x 4.75 @ .95lb
I cannot find the specs of the mini in the USB manual or elsewhere- thanks!!

There are two problems with this statement:

A.) All current Apple computers (with the exception of the Mac Pro - which will join in soon) have the TB but no eSATA (as mentioned by others)

B.) With the much greater bandwidth and bi-directional nature you could be offloading media from two (or even more) RED STATIONS onto a TB storage while being able to use the same storage for on-set work (editing/grading)

Just saying...

Either mac needs to add usb3 or everyone else needs to support TB.... This is so frustrating. I don't' want to lug around a 17" but may have to cave unless the next MBP has usb3.

I think that next time I order something from Red I'll have to add this to my order. Simply having a backup Red Station would be nice for peace of mind. Getting that backup in a compact package that's easier to travel with (not that the current Red Station is all that big or anything though honestly) sounds especially nice.

REDCINE-X was optimized for the 17" MBP. just saying...

if you all scroll back a few pages Jarred has made some good arguments on why red has NOT adopted TB yet. COST being the main one. If you all want to pay $500 or more for a TB reader
then start a thread and they will justify the expense. Right now USB 3.0 is more sensible and widespread.

Now if only it would offer proper ESATA support on PC. It's ridiculous that I have to use one of my PCI-E slots for another ESATA card when I have ESATA right on the motherboard.

How about the HiRes 15" :)
I agree usb3 is perfect but I don't see how it's very widespread when (i'm guessing) 90% of red users use mac which does't come with usb3.
It's unfortunate that we are caught in the middle of a standardization wait...

Last year before I upgraded my laptop I was going to move to 17" but then Thunderbolt came out and I thought it was going to solve all the problems... apparently not.

If you could put a couple TB of HD in a 17" nothing would stop me.

USB 3.0 does seem like a good future and I hope Apple realizes that.

Step 1: Connect RED Station Mini using included cables

Step 2: Insert SSD

Step 3: Turn on Red Station Mini (switch is on the back)

Step 4: ???

Step 5: Profit!

I mean really... I'm not sure what kind of manual you'd need for a card reader lol

Lucky if you've got one. ... But The quad charger went faster into back order ;)
