Ok, would this work...

Connecting the MacBook Air to the RedStation via thunderbolt adapter/FW800. And then connecting an external USB3 HDD to the RedStation.

Will the Macbook see the USB drive and allow me to send data directly off the RedMag to the USB3 drive at USB3 speeds?

Otherwise i'm stuck with MacBook Air to RedStation via TB/FW800 adaptor. And then connecting an external FW800 HDD to the daisy-chain port on the RedStation. Slower. but still better than into the Macbook and then out of another USB2 port....

Hi Simon...
I am shooting documentaries outside... lots of travel... everything needs to be redundant for me. Could only afford one red station and got the esata/FW800... for my MBP and my MBA with USB2 and Thunderbolt.... now I switched MBA to USB3 and got a USB3 red station as "back up" or ultra portable solution. I will be back in the hotel in about an hour...WAIT... I have it all in my computer bag.. let me check...
OH... you need a double USB3 end part, the end that does not look like an funny double mini usb plug. I do not know if it would work. "Normal" FW drives with USB interface as well (such as the rugged Lacie) do not support firewire connection and then accessing the USB port.
Sorry mate... no help here...
