Hi,

Thought I'd share a video about how I recently shot a 2 page spread photo for an article in Snowboard Canada Magazine using a Red camera. It was for the Tech issue and they wanted to show how this camera can be used to produce print quality stills and the potential of shooting snow films and photos simoultaneously.

Here's a link to the behind the scenes video, near the end it shows the Red Captured shot:

or direct to vimeo: http://vimeo.com/15894652

And here's the image as it ran in the magazine (the highlights on the side of the jump were not lost, but I guess they decided to colour it that way, was the only disappointment the resolution looked great):

nice! cool stuff man. anything else coming up with you and your red i should know about?

Also, I noticed in the video that you appear to be hand holding the camera out the side door. Is that how you filmed the shot? I am planning on shooting some Everglades footage and love your clips. Thanks.

I think it'd be great to use when you can set it up on a tripod, but the traditional handycam+wide-angle+following-the-snowboarder shots aren't nearly as easy to pull off the with the RED1 due to size/weight.... Just another reason we need Epic and Scarlet. I know that's not exactly what this article has in mind, but those tracking shots are so awesome.

Nice. I like the editing on that BTS piece as well, especially the end section with the overlay pointing out the shot that went to print.

Great job. I am jealous, I would love to work on something like this.

Great shots. What lens did you use?

I want to take a guess. A Canon 10-22mm, maybe? Below is rough .jpg print screen from the Vimeo cropped in to see the lens. Hope you don't mind Bryant Bell.

Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to go snowboarding, not that I would even dream about doing what these guys are doing here, he he he...

Hi Guys, Thanks for your comments,

Mike, I was using a Canon 24-70mm. We were shooting from the helicopter for the video 'Hello World' with another Red, but the one which produced the still image was on sticks on the ground at 4k.

Rob, absolutely. I forgot to mention that I wrote the accompanying article about the camera and how it can be used for snowboard videos and that the size is a bit heavier than usual cameras but it can still be used. Most of the footage is captured in areas that are accessed by snowmobile, so we need to pare down the camera so that everything we needs fits into a backpack. Using the smaller Canon zooms helps save space as well as shooting to CF cards. At the end of the day it's not much heavier than when we used to use the tank like Arri S with a big battery pack.

Sean R, thanks! I also forgot to mention that I edited the BTS video as well.

Roberto, yes the heli angle was using a 10-22 but from the angle that produced the still shot, it was a Canon 24-70 I believe.

Chris, no the Behind the Scenes video was a mixture of DSLR, HVX, and others. Excepting for a few and the one which morphs into the page at the end.

Thanks for the info Bryant. I have a niece Angeli Van Laanen who competes on the pro circuit in Woman's Half Pipe ski. She also does a great deal of filming around the world and has appeared in a number a magazines. She love the look of the Reds in the finished shots. Was hoping to catch her at the X-Games on an Epic-X, but it looks like that will have to wait. Look forward to more posts from your travels.

Bryant,

This heli shoot just looks amazing in the film. I have been following your films for several years now and am really excited to see you filming with a couple of Reds now. They have really looked awesome in Elektro and Hello World.

You mentioned above in the thread that you pretty much pack the reds into backpacks to transport it, and the film appears to has a good deal of backcountry shot on the Red. How is the workflow process out there? I am gearing up for a park shoot with the Red and was planning on shooting to the Ram, but do you usually just pack a ton of CF cards and dump them all at night? If so, how many cards is that?

Also, I am just curious if you know what the settings were for Carlo's shot of Jesmond in the heli? Wasn't sure if it was 3k or 2k at 120. Thanks and great job on this spread!
