  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED sequence presets and external monitoring

We use a Panny Vt25 hooked up to 2nd DVI port and have zero issues. 10bit processing I get, but 10 bit monitoring is not terribly useful, as the final product is most often (for us always) an 8 bit broadcast beamed to panels in homes that are 8 bit at best, or a web delivery that is often worse.

Monitoring in 10 bit, to me, is like monitoring in 3D when the deliverable will only be 2D.

An extremely well calibrated and perfectly 1:1 mapped panel, but 8 bit, is giving you the most accurate window into what your work will look like to viewers. (And I assume we all know why a crappy display is not advisable, even though it represents a more typical user-scenario.)

I'd rather monitor in 10 bit, even if the audience doesn't.

If I see any banding in 10 bit, I know there's something wrong with my footage. If I see it on an 8 bit display, I can never be sure if it's really there.

if banding is there in 8 bit, on a well calibrated, dependable monitor, then really it is there. 8 bit is what you are delivering (in TV/web). On a good monitor 8 bit is free of banding as 8bit can cover enough color range. Banding from 8 bit comes from 8 bit as a workspace or 8bit as a recording media type, not final monitoring.

Rob, I believe DVI only allows 8bit.....maybe i heard you wrong because later you say working in 8bit. But 10bit over HDMI is possible . I have the same monitor 50" Vt25.....great monitor.

Vt25 is amazing - I have Rec 709 dead-on after calibration in THX mode - VT30 is a step backwards for our needs so we're glad we got a vt25 while we could.
