  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi, I would like to please ask about the characteristics of the pixels on the new sensors used in the Epic X and S, and Scarlet.

What fill factor do they have?

What quantum efficiency, quantum well capacity, minimum sensitivity, signal to noise ratio, and latitude in and out of hdr?

Do they use Bayer filter or other?

Years ago we were told that we would be told where the sensor tech came from and manufacture, but have not heard yet? All we were originally shown was a photo showing the sort of technology that I think people thought was from a Canon camera.

I hope you can give some answers, at least for the scarlet fixed.

Thanks again Red team.

Wayne.

... is that the sound of crickets I hear?

These are highly proprietary questions. You should not expect an answer.

They are actually fairly common questions outside of consumer electronics. In a TV studio your engineers should not be purchasing any camera equipment without knowing exactly what it does, even if they have to find out by testing it themselves. These sorts of things are fairly commonly quoted in various fields, indeed Red let's us know some of them such as latitude that would be hard to hide. I suppose I could design a test to test the shape of fill factor, but a lot of expense, expertise and time. Companies tend to know exactly what their competition has anyway. Plus we were supposed to find out where the tech came from anyway (I already probably have guessed, but not for certain). So at least a no official comment would be ok.

I am also interested in it for camera use and custom designed equipment for them. Some sort of stuff I would do requires some very fine measuments.

So I humbly ask if Red could make it official at some time, even after the products are released. I can also point out how great the specs are to people.

If you have a genuine 3rd party engineering need, I'm sure contacting Red directly and in private, you'll have more luck - although I'm sure you'd have to sign an NDA at the very least.
