Hey guys!

So Ive been traveling around for quite some time, working for tourism boards and private companies, but everything Ive shot for the past few years has been limited to 1080.

Im ready to make the move to 4k. But really wanted to get your thoughts on workflow while traveling.

I plan on shooting 4k while on the go, and would have basically a laptop with me outfitted with editing software.

If you could pick and choose, what would you bring with you while going to southeast asia with a RED?

Computer capable of 4k?
Software?
Harddrives?
Mags?

Etc.

What would be your ideal configuration if you could choose.

Thanks for your input!

Good question Carlos, I find myself in that same boat sometimes. Take what i say with a grain of salt because what works for me may be far different for your situation

computer: my Macbook Pro and even Air have been able to handle Dragon footage.. the air little less so. not to mention solid battery life all around.

software: avid or premiere.. this shouldn't change much from a desktop and frankly id just keep using what you've been using. I like to use red cine-x to ingest as well and do review.

hd's: I have a small pelican case to carry drives around.. usually a couple portable 2-4tb ones with thunderbolt 2. and a larger raid that needs ac to power for when i'm in a hotel or not on the go.

mags: this all depends on how much you're shooting. there are many useful spec sheets that are floating around with record times for each redcode ratio. my advice is to bring more than you think you'll need.

My setup would probably be as followed.

15" macbook pro retina
premiere cc
lacie rugged thunderbolt
Lacie 2big drive
4x 120 gb mini mags

One super useful thing to have with you if you're editing / grading while travelling is

I've been using a thunderbolt 1 version for 3 or 4 years and it's been indestructible.
I also always have at least 4 WD Elements Portable 2tb drives as well. Always have
at least 2 copies of files on separate drives. I often have one in the bag with me at all
times and one in the hotel or with some one else.

Ideally raid 5s but settle for raid 1s or bus powered sometimes. Ideally my rocket X, but do half debayer in a pinch on my relatively new laptop. Ideally a calibrated screen simply for accuracy

How big is your crew? Budget? What style of shooting? What do you perceive as your likely limitations? Are you planning on actually editing while traveling or just checking and backing up footage? Seems like there are so many possible answers that some more info might really help narrow down your ideal package.

We travel a lot and the Lacie 4TB rugged raid drives have worked great for us. It gets really annoying and time consuming really fast if we have to baby all of our gear while we are traveling. So it's really nice being able to just throw the drive in our backpack and grab it quickly when we need it. We edit 5k timelines in premiere with the native files and it hasn't given us any problems

These are the ones i'm talking about http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1135375-REG/lacie_9000601_4tb_2_x_2tb.html

Thanks for your input. You do all this on a macbook pro? Been a while since the last macbookpro update. I might wait out for the new release.

Bring at least 2 mag readers. They often die and you'll be happy that you brought an extra one if you're on set and you find yourself in that (likely) situation. It happened to me on a shoot across the country. Having a extra mag reader saved my behind.

Yes on a macbook pro. We run the viewer in premiere at 1/4th resolution and it plays just fine. Plus the viewer only takes up about a 4th of the screen so there is no noticeable difference between playing back in full or 1/4th resolution. If the timelines get too heavy we just drop the resolution to 1/8th and the playback quality is still very usable.

Premiere pro somehow works amazingly well with R3D footage in my experience. I can work with 5K R3D clips a lot easier than simple 4k clips from our phantom 3.

Just finished a two month arts residency in Iceland in the dead of winter. Took the Scarlet MX with me plus a highly specced macbook, 2 lacie thunderbolts (1 as backup) editing on premiere pro cc. Filmed everything with 2 64gb mags and one station. Prepped myself for everything going wrong but taking care of your gear is top priority. Think of all your contingency plans and if it does go wrong, you should be prepared to whatever length you deem necessary.

The Lacie 4TB Rugged looks pretty nice but I'm always hesitant to use RAID setups like that... There are two physical drives inside that thing, and when you only have two drives in a RAID you're essentially doubling your risk of a drive failure. It only takes one of those two to fail and you lose the data. Of course, I'm sure you guys are carrying a bunch of these things so you've got backups. And the reviews look pretty great, so I'm probably just being a worry wart!

Might have to add a couple of those to the wishlist... haha
