  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Scarlet VS RED MX

Sorry to burst your bubble but Scarlet will not be FF 3K. No matter what RED have up their sleeves, I don't think they will release a camera that has more coverage than an EPIC. The only real positive to having FF is prospectively better lowlight and compatibility with lenses for stills, but counterproductive for all those that want to use Cine Glass. For motion FF is IMO just a bad idea, and it just makes focus wrangling harder. We already have vimeo and Youtube full of videos that are only in focus for 5% of their runtime. Hehe!! In the previous line up the EPIC FF was Monstro sensor at 6K, if I remember correctly.

How is that more coverage? its the same sized sensor and its gonna have half the data thru put. So sorry to blow shrink your bubble but times have changed so have the scarlets specs... gotta be a that canon

How long have you been following these forums? This is exactly why Jim posted this:

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"

We are so happy to have a complete competitive advantage. We consider our customers as one of us. What we have always done is beat the competition in price/performance. But the misguided expectations for Scarlet are killing me.

4k is not unreasonable. Competetive is 4k @ S35.

How long have you been reading english and doing math?

They already have the 4k for RED ONE MX. They want to keep that camera so yeah i think it will be 3k for sure. 4k for that camera make no sense and 3k is HUGE.
the only question i think will be. Full frame, 2/3 , fixed, non fixed.

RED one mx and Epic are both Full frame. I hope they pimp their camera to fit the other. to only sell Full frame sensor camera.2k,3k i don't care. i just want full frame with non fixed.
I guess we will see. maybe their 2/3 sensor will be the best thing ever too and the depth of field will be insane. i don't know.

4K is not unreasonable, FF is not unreasonable, 300fps is not unreasonable, the price is not unreasonable and neither is the timeframe. But when all of these are put together, it's clear it's not going to happen this thursday.

Truth is we don't know what Canon will announce on the 3rd, and neither does Jim. People think it will be 4K @ S35, but we don't know, just like we wouldn't know the price of this camera. It could as well be $40.000 and be in direct competition with Epic which would make your assumptions for the Scarlet completely hopeless for now.

It's interesting how you all compare Scarlet to feature films shot on the "same size" sensor.

I hardly think that all those films you mention were restricted to either 224 mm (equiv.) or f2.4.

RPP's are still marked as usable for Scarlet. If the mini Primes are still in the books, you could kill the so called "limitations". Not that you couldn't already do that with the RPP's.

I think you want an EPIC, not Scarlet.

Why do people keep requesting a FF scarlet? I want a 2/3 3k scarlet. DOF is so played out these days. Just give me a clean crisp 3k RAW image and I would be more than happy.

"More than happy".......
Reading your post Patrick.... Something sort of occured to me that is kind of cool in my messed up mind... ;) So yeah... Throughout cinematic history (the past tons of years) we have all enjoyed the vibe of a ton of 16mm movies... as well as 35mm movies... That said both of those formats have different flavors and different looks... (hold that thought)
Somewhere on this board or somewhere along my "Red Reading and or You Tube/vimeo viewing" ... I think it was a Peter Jackson interview.... where Peter very simply said... "hey i dont care what the technology is.... "i just simply like the way the Red image looks"... and very simply he said... thats why he shoots it...
So... Yeah... we all have lots of wish's and hopes for what Scarlet may or may not turn out to be... And reading that post... I thought... "Yaaaaknowwww"... I guess i dont give a rats A** what it is... as long as its got a really really cool look... for both stills and motion... and following that path down.... the more I thought about it... I'm thinkin... even if its not remotly the image of an "Epic"... "who cares".... If its an insanly cool image.... which im bettin it will be... Im good with that... and when its avialable... for my world of weddings etc.... im going to try to exploit the hell out of it... ! So yeah... 3k raw or not... Give me a killer killer image that gives me an edge on my competitors in my world... and Im off to the races....

People who dosne't care about DOF are not in the cinema industry. i'm a movie director and DOF crucial to tell the story. TED told at every interview. it's a cinema camera. not a little thing for the web

You know one day the cameras will know how far each pixel is from the lens... then all this "bigger sensor=more DOF" for the same F/T stop garbage will end. You could just add it in post, oh wait... there already is an adaptive optics (and even RED is suggesting they are looking into it). Combine that with Adaptive shutter (or whatever they will call it), bake the info into the RAW file and your golden.

As for scarlet... relax... its less than a week away. Be less worried about specs and more about getting your funds ready. :)

DOF w****** can go for an EPIC OR an EPIC-S OR MX.

DO NOT EXPECT SCARLET TO BE GREATER THAN 2/3"! There is a very high probability you will be disappointed.

Take Nov. 3rd for what it is, whatever it is, and be content with that. Rampant speculation, while entertaining, is about as likely to hit the mark as my next bet on the casino...

A couple of clarifcations for folks:

FF/Full-Frame = Still-format 35mm. This format is significantly larger than the (approximately) Super-35 (or S35) format used by Red MX, Red Epic, Alexa, and classic film cameras (think Arriflex 535). The 5D is an example of a camera with a Full-Frame sensor, which is similar in size to 65mm motion film.

DOF= Depth of field. When you say you want DOF, you're actually asking for MORE of the image to be in focus, like Mr. Orson Wells was always so intent upon. I think when I people say, "I want DOF" they really mean they want "shallow DOF." Sorry, this is a bit of a pet peeve to me.

Ok, pedantic rant ended. :-):hand:
