  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Scarlet vs BMC

The Genesis is pretty much a "panavised" sony F35.

Pretty much. But since the Genesis came before the F35, you could rightly say that the F35 is a "Sonyfied Genesis."

The F35 was in many ways an improved Genesis, but those improvements (including an updated sensor) were, as I recall, incorporated into all manufactured Genesis cameras as well.

And since the sensor is so small it will not intercut well with epic or alexa or any such cameras as the sensor is so small, so if you use it as a b-cam it will just be a b-cam. In other words it would be a camera that does not hold up, a camera that you probably would need a good set of excuses for if you use it next to something that has a larger sensor.

I've used the BMCC alongside an EPIC and Alexa on episodic TV drama. It intercuts VERY well with both, especially the Alexa.

The first TV series I used the BMCC on, Puberty Blues, just won Australia's highest accolade for TV drama production, the AACTA. (Australian academy award). There are many shots in this series where I used the BMCC, and several scenes towards the end of the series where it was the ONLY camera used.

I've since shot a second series primarily using EPIC, Underbelly Squizzy. We had 4 EPIC's on main unit. We also had two BMCC's running, often at the same time.

I think you're overexaturating the importance of a Super 35 sized sensor myself. You're also not really understanding when you would use a camera with a so called *small* sensor. You use it for close ups. Wide shots for the EPIC in Underbelly worked well. The 5K files were great for VFX and re-touching (it was period) and we OFTEN used the BMCC CU's in the same scene where you don't pick the resolution difference. Nothing to do with the sensor size.

I'm now onto my THIRD TV Series, the fourth season of Offspring, which has always shot RED. 4 EPIC's on main unit, 2 on Second unit and 2 BMCCs.

I'm telling you...it cuts against a RED or Alexa just fine when you need it to. It "holds up" in your words.....

Not only that the BMC can not share the lenses with "real cinema cameras" where as the scarlet shooting next to the epic or alexa is a fully fledged B-cam, possible to hold the same lenses and delivers a good enough DOF, resolution, ISO DR etc.

I've had PL mount lenses on the last two series and I've been using the same lenses that go on the EPIC.

You can't make sweeping statements like "won't hold up" and "Real cinema cameras" because it's up to the individual filmmaker to decide. If I wanted to I could shoot a series on GoPros and etch-a-sketches if I wanted to...(and the producers let me). It's only for the audince to decide what's "good enough"

There are shots on all three of the TV series I've mentioned I could ONLY get with a BMCC. Just like there were shots I could have only gotten with an EPIC or Alexa.

You might know the rumour / story of how that came about ?
