  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Scarlet vs BMC

He equivocates from claiming that resolution doesn't matter and that "it's all about how it looks" (ie skintones and dynamic range) to claiming he'd prefer shooting a 120fps scene with a GoPro3 than a Scarlet simply because it's at a better resolution (and this is what he "normally shoots").

This is exactly what I meant when I said "putting him in his place", Peter. His opinions, or arguments rather, just don't make sense. They even contradict his own "analyses".
We are talking about 2K delivery here. It's doesnt matter if the camera shoots 2.5K or 4K. But for 2K delivery it matters if the camera shoots 1K or 2K. I'm not paying 15,000$ to shoot 1K 120fps when I can shoot 720p 120fps for 400$. Better resolution and 14,600$ price difference is more important in this case than better DR or other qualities. More so when both of these cameras don't even have good enough relosution for 2K delivery anyways.

Again, that makes BMCC a better fit for your particular case. That doesn't make it a superior tool. You are claiming that it is simply a better camera and that is why you are being ridiculed. If you can, just concede that it is a better camera for you, and let it go.

yes if you can deal with the horrible control low battery run time(in the cold my old gopro did not last very long at all), non raw files, lack of lens choices, much worse rolling shutter then go ahead (I have a gopro and love it for POV snowboarding). It's all trade offs, and to most the gopro would not meet the standards needed for overall production for the most part, but if it fits you then that is a very selective market that not all people fit into so getting others to agree with these statements on the whole is going to be a bit of a stretch. Seems like the FS700 is the camera for you.

2.7K/24p looks really good with Gopro 3. 1080p/60p and 1440/48p are also very nice. Can't wait for the next year to get 4K/24p and 2.7K/48fps.

I can't wait for a gopro with very little rolling shutter, don't care as much about resolution seeing as it's a POV cam and snowboarding can cause some very high frequency vibrations that makes the world ripple. I would love a go pro that is rock solid as I'm ripping down a hill off ledge's even landing off huge booters. We each have different needs and it's impossible to fulfill them all at such an affordable price point. I'm just exceedingly happy that we have the options we have today it's really a no excuses capture market these days.

mah I'm off to finish my POS short Christmas special I'm filming for my family... and sadly no I don't think any of you will ever see it as it's not gonna be very good, kinda a had to be there thing.

Happy holidays, stay passionate!

Stephen. Good image stabilizer would be great in Gopro, but with 4K there's a lot of room to stabilize the shots in post.

The Scarlet shooting at 4K doesn't have enough resolution for 2K delivery? I'm confused.

I meant if you shoot 120fps.

Can someone give me an example of a Red Scarlet feature film with good cinematography? I would really like to watch it. (and I am NOT bashing anything, I really do want to watch a good movie shot on the Scarlet)

What's the problem? The Scarlet is as good as the Epic, just not that much of slo-mo. How many of the many movies shot on RED needed that?

Just as good, if you don't count lower resolutions, lower fps, compression limitations etc.

yeah 4k 24fps 6:1 is really slumming it, he means it's the exact same if you shoot at the same rates, or just watch some R1 films. Josh find a local with an epic or scarlet and go out and shoot for a bit might be very enlightening...

+1, "slumming it" lol that made my day!

The guy says Scarlet is as good for feature films. Only lower fps which is not usually needed in movies.
