Will the Scarlet dragon available for sale without upgrade ?

They haven't stated if it'll happen yet... So no one really knows...

You should really put a "?" at the end of the title. Made me disappoint.

No. The upgrade is the only way to get a Scarlet dragon. Source: my bomb squad rep.

Is that forever, or just currently?

Side note: the "Dragon Forum" is arguably the best place to ask this question... And I also wouldn't count my chickens until Jim or Jarred make an official comment (BSreps have been wrong before and things change at the drop of a hat around here.)

The Scarlet upgrade is still being worked out. It is extremely complicated. With all the board changes we had to make to get Dragon into EPIC, we have to translate those changes to Scarlet. Give us some time...

My biggest question too. I'm about to buy a second Scarlet and upgrade it later, but I'm afraid that till the end of September they will announce Scarlet-D for a reasonable price. Are you Red :)

I just don't think it's a smart move to pull the trigger on a $9500 sensor upgrade if there's a chance that, six months later, they offer an entire Scarlet-D brain BNIB for something like $12500... MX maybe old news compared to Dragon, but it's not exactly pure shit (it'll work just fine in those 6 months, and then I'd have A&B cams).

I'm wondering how long upgrades will be available for. If I want to upgrade a Scarlet to a Scarlet Dragon or trade in for an Epic, will that upgrade path be available for a while or will those options go away. As far as I'm aware, there are no trade in deals for Red One's anymore, so I'm assuming trade in's are a limited time thing in this case as well, but I'd like more clarity eventually.

True. A sneaky move would be to close off upgrade paths before announcing Scarlet-D brain pricing (assuming they do decide to sell standalone Scarlet-D brains)... Basically force people's hand to upgrade and (potentially, although not very likely given RED's transparency) stab them in the back with brain pricing being only a couple grand more than the upgrade cost... Again, time will tell and as Jim said all that info will begin trickling out when RED themselves know how they're going to handle everything.

I for one think that the upgrade path is one heck of a deal. I think that most likely the upgrade price is very affordable for us considering the amount of overhaul that the camera needs to get to the specs that are announced.

I'm excited as hell to get it so while I wait I think I might just smoke a Padron 1964 Anniversary cigar while I contemplate the philisophical of extended DR and possibly using ISO in place of ND filters in some situations.

I am happy to hear this. It gives me a bit more time to save!

I truly believe that RED as a company is not out to screw anyone over. The Scarlet upgrade paths are really a good deal wether you go to Epic or the Scarlet Dragon. I doubt they are going to do anything sneaky so once they figure out how to get Dragon in there, enjoy your summer!

I completely agree. For me the Scarlet D upgrade path is everything I can want in a camera and more. I am not a rental house nor do I make multi-million dollar films. For everything I do the Scarlet D is the correct choice. I can upgrade my framerate and dynamic range and my light sensitivity for a price that I can bare. Would I love an Epic Dragon, of course, but I do not have the resources for 19K.

Not sure if this has been explicitly addressed by RED: I am planning to trade in my Scarlet for an Epic ($9500) in the next few months. I am hoping - but don't know for sure - that another upgrade to Dragon, from Epic, will still be possible for me at some point in the future. Anyone know if RED has posted either way?

It's relative, and it's obviously a great offer in theory. However, there are a boatload of what-ifs now that every manufacturer is on board with CMOS sensors, 4k+ resolution, and raw, and that's a problem for a sensor upgrade that costs more than the original purchase price of the camera (and hence why finding out if a stand-alone SD is in the cards and at what price). No doubt Dragon will be the cat's ass -- something that the other manufacturers strive for -- but the cost-to-ROI ratio (that is, the additional amount of $$ Scarlet-Dragon will bring in over what Scarlet-MX will bring in) might not be high enough to warrant the purchase.

I use BMC as the best example because they seem to be carrying the brightest torch, but if they (or anyone) announce an FF35 4k-to-5k camera for $5k with 12-14stops at NAB14, plenty of Scarlet upgraders will undoubtedly (and understandably) have buyer's remorse over their $9500 sensor. Particularly true when you consider the amount of "why are people racing to the bottom with their rates" threads on RU... The vast majority of clients will NOT pay more for (Scarlet) Dragon; they'll merely expect that image quality at no additional cost. So with Scarlet-Dragon specifically it kind of has negative returns and realistically you'd be better off buying more, cheaper cameras that do "just as good a job" in the client's eyes.... Moreover, I think FF35 has more of an impact on image characteristics than 5k or 16 stops does (from the audience point of view) and hence that has more selling potential than 5k or 16+ stops... Epic Dragon has the best of both worlds (6k and 1.18x crop), but Scarlet-Dragon falls right into the "unknown" zone and hence it's in a really tough spot when the asking price is so high (despite being the best offer out there for the bleeding-est edge tech).

And all of that is predicated on a.) actual delivery times of Scarlet-Dragon (just upgrade) vs. competitors (next?) offerings, b.) if RED sells standalone Scarlet-Dragon Brains (when and at what price), and c.) your client base and how you make the majority of your income (because honestly, no amount of tech specs help you there). Everything is still hypothetical at this point, especially for Scarlet.

I totally agree! I want to get my hands on my upgrade ASAP, but I still have yet to gather all of my funds to upgrade. Got tons of things on my plate to pay for but the Dragon upgrade is at the top of my list!
