I'd like to hear what people are thinking about the Scarlet and how it may relate to the Nikon D4 announced yesterday. Obviously there are some big differences in terms of resolution and codec, but with some of the steps toward a more capable and featured video camera, it looks like this Nikon may be the first DSLR to push the rest toward a more capable, professionally usable DSMC style system.

What are you guys thinking about the relationship between the two cameras at their given price points?

BTW, some of the Scarlet footage that's been surfacing looks AMAZING!

How do we think this D4 footage looks? http://vimeo.com/34666308

Do some of the wide, sweeping pans of the rock climber around 4:15, or the crane up at the beginning of the kayaker around :17 look choppy?

Cheers

Steve

I and a friend were waiting for d4 for a while... with few specs coming from time to time we were getting more and more excited. This is gonna be a wonderful DSLR. Even if we were expecting better video capabilities, it comes logical that 24,25 and 30fps in full hd are up. This is a great oponent to the 1dx.

But in terms of video, even if those images are great, it would for sure not compete with the Scarlet, let's be clear ! ;-D

Until Nikon does 4K, there is no relation to make.

Yeah, I read about this some today... pretty awesome camera in my estimation. Nice features and neat that you can get uncompressed out of the HDMI, should help in a lot of situations. I wonder how they handle the down sampling from the chip... the footage looks very sharp. I also hear it performs well in really low light. I was disappointed in reading that it only records 25Mbps data rate in H.264 to the internal memory... not much to work with in many situations. Looks like Canon sure missed the boat with the 1Dx on a few of the features listed here on the D4.

Neither the D4 nor the 1Dx make me second guess my Scarlet orders... to me the value of RAW, Increased Dynamic range, super high data rate, not to mention 4K resolution are really the hallmarks of the whole Red system. I suppose uncompressed output would improve grading of the Nikon footage in post, but the sample footage we have played with from Red stands up to very robust post processing.

BTW, I think the "Choppy" is a result of the compression to Vimeo in high motion shots... even the titles at the end were choppy. But it could be the 25Mbps compression in the camera too. Be interesting to see the original files.

4K RAW

But it does have a few interesting new video features: uncompressed output through HDMI (8-bit 4:2:2); "2.7x crop" native 1920x1080 mode, like GH2; and it takes line level input ;)

Coupled with an HDMI recorder it's a good solution for people who want to stay in DSLR world for motion. No RAW, no 4K, no PL mount, no industry recognition makes it incomparable to Scarlet. But it's a great complement camera for stills, documentary, and low budget jobs with lots of record time--client can't afford the Scarlet, whip out the D4.

I'm still waiting for an even better DSMC-style photo camera from Nikon, one with a better internal codec, which we'll see in 4 years or so... by that time, Red will have capitalized on the quiet switch sitting on all of our side handles.

(SHAMELESS PLUG if you have one to sell me, pm, I'm desperate.)

In the case that Nikon implemented the full 1.4 HDMI protocol at D4 than 4K image could be possible to stream via clean HDMI output using High Speed HDMI cables.

4K Support
The HDMI 1.4 specification adds support for extremely high video resolutions that go far beyond today’s 1080p systems. 4K is shorthand for 4,000 lines wide by 2,000 lines high,
or roughly four times the resolution of a 1080p display. The term actually covers two formats, both supported in the HDMI 1.4 specification:

3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high
4096 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high

4K displays will put high-end home theater systems roughly on a par with the state-of-the-art Digital Cinema projectors used in many commercial movie theaters.
Staying true to its commitment to future-readiness, the HDMI standard can now support these systems with the extremely high bandwidth connectivity they will require.

How to Ensure 4K functionality in your Home Theater System

Look for devices that support 4K functionality.
All High Speed HDMI cables will support 4K functionality when connected to 4K devices. You can use your existing High Speed HDMI cables or choose a different cable type.

Also we have to wait and see what is going on with Canon 1Dx and HDMI (1.4 ???) clean output.

I honestly feel the scarlet is unbeatable. I am very excited for the D4 and want one badly, but it is no scarlet. It will make awesome web vids and be an incredible stills camera. Thank goodness Nikon stepped up their video game. Exciting camera, but not a pro cinema camera like the scarlet is.

d4 = great crash cam :D

Oh so it will do 4k output through HDMI? Well never mind then. Still, the limitations go far beyond the resolution.

I don't think this is part of the camera spec, just that Sanjin was noting that in theory you could output 4k on a full hdmi spec, if NIKON were to allow that in the future and assuming you could find a 4k hdmi recorder.

For the price i don't really understand why you wouldn't get an AF100 or FS100. those are real video cameras with so many advantages over the Nikon. I don't get it.
The reality though is that those cameras are in a different category when compared to the much superior scarlet/Epic

A photo camera is not a video camera .

A photo camera is not made and optimized to make video , it is made to make some good photo , not perfect video like the scarlet was made for .

There s Nothing to really compare !

Also comparing Raw camera video 16bit vs hdlsr mpeg2 8bit it s like comparing formula 1 car and your daily car .

Because you also shoot stills.

I hate when SLRs are compared to RED. I LOVE RED. I LOVE NIKON. Don't have the money to step into RED territory just yet, in my career path. But, I own a ton of 2.8 zooms and 1.4 primes in Nikon glass. I've had to use the Canons with lens adapters the past 2 years. With my investment in glass, and the uncompressed video feature on this cam, it just became the PERFECT bridge on my path to RED territory. These truly are wonderful times. There was HUGE gaps in level of quality in cameras up until just a couple years ago. This announcement made the gap even smaller for me.

I'll be buying 2 of these, enjoying them the next couples years, building my portfolio, and getting my income to a level where a RED investment will be justifiable.
