  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Scarlet and Nanoflash

Hi there, I use the scarlet with a nanoflash. I run a short SDI cable out to the nanoflash, power it straight from vmount battery with dtap. If you are recording on the scarlet at the same time, set the TC mode to record run then set Nanofash to trigger when TC is running.

If you're recording only into nanoflash trigger by allocating the TC toggle to a button on the scarlet (even record button if you like). Then use that button to stop or start.

It works great unless you're using Sync TC with separate sound recording, then it's super complicated to make it work perfectly.

Good luck

Ok so i have tried everything.

1. I'm going out of the Scarlet SDI into the Nanoflash SDI
2. NanoFlash Trigger - Timecode TC
3. Nanoflash Source - Embeded
4. Scarlet timecode I've tried both TOD and Edge - is there any other option i'm not seeing?
5. Powering off the Dtap

The funny thing is the Nanoflash is registering the connection BUT its not matching the timecode, it remains 00:00:00:00, and i keep getting a message in the NanoFlash "No 24psf out on HDMI" but my source is set to SDI, plus where is shows source i'm getting 1080p23 and it forces it to 140mb even though i up it to max 280mb, but i'm running 29.97fps.

If i change the source from SDI to HDMI nothing happens.

Is there any ways of testing the SDI port? anything i'm missing.

Hey Paul,

To let you know, Convergent just sent me a Beta firmware update to allow you to trigger the Scarlet(I am sure this will work with the Epic) w/o triggering the SSD. I did a test today, it worked perfectly. Sorry I couldn't respond sooner with this info.

ooh, that firmware sounds good.. any chance I could get that firmware beta too?

Can't think what's going on there, I've tried all my settings and can't get it to replicate your error. Records at 23p 24p all fine with TC rolling.

Have you checked the scarlet Monitor Control HD-SDI output is set to the right frequency? The nanoflash will lower the bitrate if it thinks the cards aren't fast enough, I get this too even though my cards are certified for 280mbps.

Have you tried the latest firmware?

Magnus

Hey Magnus,
About the firmware, contact Dan Keaton at Convergent Design his personal number is on there.
The only issue I have found is that when you stop and start very quickly the Nano "sticks" in the record position. I had to unplug it.
It was an extreme test, I normally do not shoot that way, the Nano had to "catch up".
Also, you probably know this, I generally turn off the RAW monitoring on the RED LCD and let it default. I find that my exposures are more accurate that way. Just experiment. Magnus, I am not sure if the last part of your question was addressed to me, my apologies if I did not answer the above question.
