How was the gear stolen? Was it a rental or a b&e?

thanks guys. They broke into our office last night. They took the red, all lenses and left the 5D MKII. Well if you think, they are professional video guys, why the hack did they take cheap remote follow focus and left expensive Shoulder Rick etc. .... Crazy. Thanks got I got insurance. Lets hope they are not making any fuzz around it ...

obviously thief is a steadicam opp,
I am sorry, i couldn't resist,
thank god you have insurance and I'll be praying RED will let you get replcement without being placed back in line

I believe it will be hard for the thieves to sell the equipment without detection. Hopefully, RED can provide you with the serial numbers of the items you purchased from them. If so, I wonder if it makes sense to post here so we can all watch out for it.

I'm sorry for your loss and for the feeling of violation that always accompanies a break in. I am going to use this news to make note of the serial number of every item I own.

As stupid as it may sound, keep an eye on ebay. A friend of mine working at a rental house in Berlin told me that when a Red One got stolen from them some years ago, the thieves tried to sell it on ebay - those morons didn't remove the rental house stickers for the photos! Needless to say they caught them.

Viel Glück Steffen!

Translated: What would be heavy shit! I'll keep an eye out! I'm very sorry for you!

Hi all,

here are the serial :

Touch LCD 7301028C9AE3

Media Pack RM-20147

Side Handle : 7201028C39D5

Camera : # 01271

Maybe they appear ???

It would be great if Redcine could detect camera serial number embedded in the R3D's files and send IP address directly to RED!

+1

This actually shouldn't be that difficult to engineer, but I don't know the legal ramifications of doing such a thing.

Riesen Scheisse has a nice ring to it. "Waitress, I'd like a slice of riesen scheisse and a cup of coffee." Or, "Only a handful of climbers have successfully reached the summit of the Riesen Scheisse."

I think watching eBay and Craigslist or equivalent is a good idea. It's true that a lot of criminals truly aren't so bright.

Hehe you guys are the best. Sorry for writing in german. though it did put up a whole lot of great responses :)

it doesn't translate to "What a big pile of crap" but rather to "that sucks big time!" Yeah translations are weird!

"That sucks big time! I'll be keeping an eye out for it! Feeling really sorry for you"

Steffen, here's to hoping they'll get caught!

All the best,
Patrick

+1 Or you could also wake up someone in the morning 'Riesen Scheisse Baby'.

Good and bad idea, Good for the reasons of theft and possible recovery.
Bad for invasion of privacy, or copyright violation of footage. May not be the right verbiage but you get where I am coming from.

Checking in Redcine for stolen camera

Checking in Redcine for stolen camera

Maybe I am dreaming of pink elephants.

But instead of spying on everyones computer online, Red could implement a list of stolen cameras in the code. So instead of transmitting all data over, it just could check if the footage has been made on a clean camera and otherwise just ping red.

Or even more smart maybe :
Have a check in the firmware - so when camera boots the firmware checks if the camera has been stolen and recorded with red as stolen- if the firmware detects a stolen camera - gotcha it simply does not boot the camera.

That would not make the code heavier and allow customers to protect their investment.

So when someone with a stolen camera upgrades the firmware - they are on the hook. As Red does not make possible that firmware gets downgraded, this should help.

That most likely will not get me back # 1271 but it would ensure, noone, who did not pay for it, can work with it !
