I'm trying to import red footage into a FCP timeline on 8 core intel mac. I'm trying to use the half sized proxies. I used the easy setup but I'm only getting audio, no video image. I rendered it, still no image. The little RT tab on the left side is set to UNLIMITED RT, playback is at HALF.

Sounds like the QT component for REDcode is not installed.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm am a bit desperate to be honest, I'm on location and hard drives from two REDS are being handed to me as I type this. The FCP browser does list REDCODE under the COMPRESSOR column. Although the sequence is listed as PRORES under the compressor column in the fcp browser. Presumably this would indicate redcode is installed? If not, what are the steps to install it?

Suggestions?:embarassed:

Try (re)installing the RED FCS2 installer from here just to be safe:

Might need the latest version.

Also, if you have QuickTime open and running in the background, make sure you fully close it when reinstalling I've seen that if QT is open it will not "release" the old version until closed and re-opened.

(I would assume the same goes for Final Cut)

I will leave it to the others to bail you out.

MY question is "What the heck are you doing being responsible for Red footage on set when you haven't a clue what to do with it?"

Not meaning to single out you specifically, but when people take jobs saying that they have certain skills and then are overwhelmed, it is bad for the entire digital cinema community.

Do you think most people would be honest and say "I am in way over my head here" or would they try to blame the camera, firmware, system, etc?

Hey Brent, I didn't ask for this job and even told the producer I've never ever worked with RED, am new to Final Cut, and am not even an editor. I'm a writer actually. So, just to make things crystal clear, I AM IN WAY OVER MY HEAD!

Reinstalling and restarting didn't help, neither to trying footage from one of the other hard drives.

No problem Brian, there's a first time for everyone. What kind of mac are you on? Intel or PowerPC?

Can you open the half proxies in Quicktime Player?

Can you open the R3Ds in REDalert?

Thanks guys, you'd all be shocked if you knew the scale of this shoot, two fully pimped reds, grip trucks, real craft services, actors you've heard of, how I ended up in the cross hairs is for the gods to know and men to ponder. I'm really not one of those "I can do anything" people. I believe what Clint Eastwood said, "A man's got to know his limitations".

At any rate, I found the guy who dumps the red drives to external hard drive, he was on the same track as you all, but it was that Beta codec that we needed apparently. He installed it and now the video is showing up in the canvas. Whew!

I'm using the 1/4 proxy, I tried 1/2 but renders were way slow, even on this 3 ghz 8 core beast.

Thanks for all the help.

at least you have fodder for your writings...best of luck.

Go to this page: www.red.com/support and have a look at the RED Final Cut Studio 2 Whitepaper, it shoud be very helpful in figuring out the options you have – there's more than one way to skin a cat (even if no animals were harmed in the making of that film).

Btw, to clarify, if anyone else has this same problem, audio and no vidoe in the FCP timeline, this is the codec that saved my bacon RED QuickTime Codec (BETA)
