Don't have $4750? THEN SEND YOUR RAW FILES TO US FOR RED Rocket™™ 4K FULL DEBAYER TRANSCODES... only $25/HR.

We are tired of being spoiled with LIGHTINING FAST TRANSCODES. Not to mention how much fun it is to watch how fast the RR blazed thru RAW files.

OUR GUILT IS YOUR GAIN!

APRIL~MAY SPECIAL!: Enjoy 4K FULL Debayers and transcodes at only $25/hr!

Yes, thats right. We have transcoded a number of features and commercials for the same low rate.

Only $25/HR! (1 Hour Min)

BASIC RULES:

Please make a BACK UP before you send us RAW files on a Hard Drive (Duh, shit happens)
Shipping and Insurance BOTH WAYS, is your responsibility.
Send us 2 Drives (1 W/RAW -1 Destination) for the fastest turn around.
* If you dont have a destination drive, then we have to transcode to our RAID and then transfer back to your drive. Transfers are only $20/hr but often take longer than the trancode!

Any reason why you can't read and write to the same drive?

Bandwidth to a single drive and to help ensure data integrity. ...Or at least that's why we don't do it here. Tim may have his own reasons.

Jeff is correct on both counts. Data Integrity of RAW files and Speed - One can always transfer the transcodes to one drive when they get it back. Saves $

Not questioning anyone's methods here, just trying to learn, but...

Tim's saying "If you dont have a destination drive, then we have to transcode to our RAID and then transfer back to your drive." How is transferring them back to their drive any different from just transcoding them to that drive in the first place?

Again, just trying to learn here, no disrespect intended...

Speed/general best practices. We would never render data to the source drive either.

If you are paying by the hour, it takes time to transfer uncompressed content. Do you want to pay the additional time? Read and writing to a single driver is also slower than reading from one and writing to another.

What is not clear, is that $25 for a runtime hour or $25 for each hour that it actually takes to process? I only ask because encoding for BD is around $75-$125 per runtime minute. So if it takes the facility a month to encode a movie, the customer is still only paying for the 90 minute runtime.

Agreed - but how would transcoding to the source drive be any different data-integrity wise than copying the transcodes to the source drive from another drive?

What Joe EDIT (and Emery) Said. (thanks)

RED Rocket™ usually transcodes FASTER than Realtime... for instance we just did 4 Hours at 4K FULL DEBAYER to PRORES4444 in about 3hours 30 minutes = $87.50 :)

Very happy client. BECAUSE he said he spent 4 days rendering half that amount of footage (24 hours a day) while his partner did the other half, 24 Hours a day for 4 days.

4 Days versus 3.5 Hours. What's your time worth?

This is a TEMPORARY rate reduction to help people understand the VALUE of the Red Rocket... which will only get MORE necessary as
Resolution and Bit rate increases with EPIC, MONSTRO, etc.

Cheers!

Are these numbers right, Tim?

Are these numbers right, Tim?

Hi Tim

So, can I be certain I have got this right because I can't make the numbers work - a 4k Full Debayer to ProRes 4:4:4:4 files take you 0.875x real time? We just ran an exhaustive set of tests on a 4 core MacPro, 8 core Mac Pro and our RED Rocket™ equipped 8 core with 8Gb and a fast 8 bay RAID 0 array, and this is what we got on multiple runs.

We ran the same 10 minute clip of 4k 16:9 23.98 footage of a reasonably complex image, with color correction, and got the following times: (the full test is on the user group under RED One)

4k Full Debayer ProRes 4:4:4:4 = 47 minutes = 4.7x real time
4k Full Debayer ProRes HQ = 48 minutes = 4.8x real time
2k Full Debayer ProRes HQ = 13 minutes = 1.3x real time
2k Full Debayer ProRes LT = 12 minutes = 1.2x real time
1080p Full Debayer ProRes HQ = 11 minutes = 1.1x real time
1080p Full Debayer ProRes LT = 11 minutes = 1.1x real time

What hardware/software combination were you running to get 0.875x output on 4k full debayer ProRes 4:4:4:4 output???? Are you running 1080p full debayer ProRes HQs at faster than 0.25x real time - so an hour takes 10 minutes or so?

Tim - Can we do a grade in REDCine-X, then send you the RED files along with the .rcx file to render QTs, ProRes, etc. out of REDCine-X? - John

Or better yet, send you xml's of 2-hour features from FCP, with the R3D's, and have you do an LUA script conform in RCX to ProRes 4x4 full res debayer with 30-frame handles...for 50 bucks...now that would rock

Hi Chris,

On all of our projects that go to 1080P - We highly recommend our clients shoot 4KHD (not 16:9) because 4KHD divides evenly by 4 to achieve 1080p. I am assuming this also boosts performance for the RR as its the easier on the processing.

We don't run tests, I can only tell you what we experienced with our client with 4KHD - which I and many others believe should be termed 4XHD

BTW We run an 8 Core Mac 2.93GHZ with 16GB RAM and an 8TB Raid 6 from MAXX Digital (EVO 2K) with 900mb read/write speeds (Areca raid infrastructure I believe) Peter Majtan builds a wicked fast raid
and is o his own now I believe.

EDIT: But we got those speeds directly to an external drive via esata.

I'd also be curious what SLOT you have the RR in? We have ours in the fastest slot. 2nd from bottom I believe is what Deanan suggests. Many threads on this...

Ill check out your link and respond more there.
