I have two Red Rockets that just went out to Red for repair and diagnostic (twice each!) Now that I have them back I'm testing them out. They both work perfectly in my old Mac Pro tower. But I also need to make sure they work in our Sonnet EchoExpress Pro external enclosure with thunderbolt connection. they don't. The cards (tested one at a time) each registered as being active in RedCine and even played back footage. But after a random amount of time not exceeding one minute it would stop playing or transcoding the footage and then spews out an ENDLESS stream of errors all similarly called "RR Callback - decode failed - frame: XX item:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX yada yada yada..."

I know the latest build of RedCine explicitly says that it fixes this problem specific to the latest version of Mac OS X for MacBook Pro retina, apparently it doesn't. Both RedRocket cards do this.

Also, it says when I open RedCine that the card is in a 4x PCI slot and will work best in a 8x slot. Due to the thunderbolt connection I'm told, How severely does that effect performance in transcoding and playback?

You need to make sure you have the latest firmware and drivers installed on your Red Rockets.
Driver 1.4.32 and Firmware 1.1.16.11 are required if you are using a TB chasis.

TB is only a 4x connection, and will perform considerably slower when transcoding to full frame output, however if you are transcoding to 1080 then you won't see much of a performance difference.

Absolutely everything us up to date.

I have the same exact setup. Macbook Retina, Sonnet Echo, Redrocket...all upgraded software and firmware on all levels. I am still testing in RedCine. I did try and export directly out of premiere last night with no success. It did not get to 1% an had it running for about 20 minutes. Given..it was a decent amount of footage (about 20 minutes of footage). I will test on my system and post any results.

[EDIT: still having problems, will update as they happen]

Thanks Adam, please do. I am still investigating if mine is working properly as well. Can you can not transcode past 1 minute?

I am on OS X 10.8.2 All new drivers and all Adobe products updates with all of the proper RED plugins added.

Gotta quit for today, I'll get back on it in the morning, thanks all.

How has this worked for you guys? Did the original posters get it working?

I have a 2012 MacBook pro (not retina) and am interested in this thunderbolt red rocket approach. I mostly need the rocket for transcoding on set. I'm considering renting one to test, but still don't want to waste a few hundred just to test, but I don't want to experiment on set where things can go wrong. I'm a bit torn, thus looking for advice from people who have experience with it.

Ive never used a rocket before at all, how does the installation via thunderbolt go for those that did get to work? Was anythig different than typical installation?

RED ROCKET tested on Magma and Sonnet external TB chassis on both rMBP and Mac mini.

Im sure its the same with any basic MacBook Pro with TB.
