RED ROCKET-X mandatory?

We do have one RR-X attached to our main editing machine and are about to build up a second - smaller / more mobile - editing machine, but the question is if we REALLY need another RR-X or if there are alternatives by now? Maybe a very potent gpu we can externally attach to any thunderbolt2 capable iMac or MacBook we have lying around.

Depends on turn around time. I prefer the GPU debayer with CPU decode myself as I skipped the RR-X this time around. I owned the original rocket. You can easily test by turning off RR-X in RCX and see what you think.
