  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ROCKET-RED DECK (Standalone Unit)

Nice idea - I'd like to be able to plug in more than one hard drive as destinations too (either direct SATA, or via eSATA and/or Thunderbolt).

It can be done but I don't know if they are doing anything like it it. After reading the DROBO thread, I drank some iced coffee and hit the drawing board after having looked at all the other options past and present. I came up with a similar thingamajig called RED REAPER (Cause it sounded badass enough that it wouldn't elicit a "pussy" response from Jarred and it fit with the concept). A dedicated CPU with hardware CRC, a bit of RAM, a high-speed SAS/SATA backplane with several drives (SSD or Traditional), connectivity for all the RED media, Thunderbolt/eSATA/USB 3.0 connectivity/Ethernet (any or all), an embedded OS, and an industrial chassis (that could be easily moved without damage) with a solid PSU and appropriate airflow design for maximum cooling. I am sure you could add additional features but I was going for something that wouldn't take up too much space.

Sounds like an interesting idea. A box that could channel the ghost of Nexto for Epic media would be very sweet indeed.

Indeed. I have owned many of the products we have discussed here in the past and found them to be excellent. However, nobody has stepped up and filled the need for RED while other cameras get whatever they need from the industry players. That's not to say RED is at fault, as it is not something they have anything to do with, but it's just that their stuff is a bit left field compared to everyone else, which is why their gear is bleeding edge. Given their engineering prowess, resources, and philosophy, I would expect them to be open to creating such a device or at the very least helping to design it. As for something portable, I came up with the SCYTHE. Cause it's smaller and would act as a companion device to the REAPER that you could connect to it. It would have a similar design but obviously be much more portable and it would use high-capacity SSDs to offload from the media in the field.
