Hey guys does anyone know if the older Red Rocket would work with the Raven footage seeing that its only 4k. You can find some great deal on these cards now days it would be awesome to be able to have one with the Raven

The product page for the original Red Rocket states:

"NOTE: The RED ROCKET is not compatible with RED DRAGON footage. For accelerated transcode and playback capabilities with RED DRAGON, RED DRAGON MONOCHROME, and MONOCHROME footage, check out the RED ROCKET-X®."

So it would seem that it's not the resolution difference that makes a Rocket-X card necessary, but rather the difference in R3D encoding between the two sensors. I'm assuming that the original Rocket offers no performance boost, whatsoever, to dragon footage.

Anyone else able to elaborate on this?

That's correct. Remember the "OG" RED Rocket was designed and optimized for Mysterium-X R3Ds. Dragon is a whole different beast and uses the RED Rocket-X.

At this point btw, a fairly powerful to modest GPU might service you better for Raven 4K material. Or the RED Rocket-X of course.

Thanks Garrett and Phil, does any one know the comparsion of a high end GPU vs a Red Rocket card as well

I use GPU acceleration on my 5k iMac, running an AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB (best I could get in that setup, but not great). My PC has a Red Rocket installed, but the Mac does a decent job keeping up. This is with DaVinci Resolve 12, btw. I would love to see some benchmark tests for Premier and Resolve handling R3D files with an ordinary GTX 960 or 970.

My rocket x is for rent and always on a shelf
