Hi Guys

I would love to use my rocket on my laptop and was wondering if this thing here will do the job: http://www.magma.com/expressbox1.asp
it sounds almost too good to be true, whack the card in the housing, go through the express port and off you go. but will it work ? would i need any special drivers or can redcine-X still detect and make use of the card ? Is anyone using this exact setup ?

thanks for the help.

Hi,

It's been a while since I've seen the MSN butterfly, given your location I'm guessing nine msn?

Anyway, my advice would be wait a bit.

The reality is that the whole system is throttled by the choke point in the I/O stream, namely the expresscard 34 slot.

it's essentially a x1 channel, and thus really compromises the throughput of the system. Plus if you are using the expresscard slot for Rocket connection, your fastest storage connect is going to be firewire 800.

None of this is a particularly good answer, and particularly now as the new MacBook Pro's have thunderbolt.

One of my top objectives at the show next week is to learn the lay of the land regarding storage and connectivity products that utilize thunderbolt.

Just wait a bit, there has got to be a better answer than the current solutions given the vastly greater throughput that TB provides.

My $.02

Steve

The Magma box doesn't work too well... If you need a solution now, the Mobile Rocket box from MAXX DIGITAL is the way to go. But Stephen is right... The ExpressCard-34 slot is a terrible bottleneck. I would hold my breath for a PCIe box with a Thunderbolt interface -- if you can. Probably still a few months away, though.

MSN butterfly ? huh lol ?

oh damn, thanks for the quick reply, it sounded too good and easy to be true.

the mobile rocket looks great and the price difference isnt that big. i see where you guys are coming from with the thunderbolt interface thought, that would be extremely sexy ^^
