Ok, so I was thinking about #21....in another thread I suggested that it could be in-camera editing, a pretty handy feature. This could be metadata based, maybe even a non-destructive method.

But then I got to thinking about just how powerful the camera is and what the camera can do regarding data after it's recorded. This made me think about the RED ROCKET, which is essentially RED's processing engine in a PC card form. The same type of engine is built into the camera and needed to record/encode/decode the data within the camera. After shooting you've got a hefty piece of processing hardware just sitting around, why not use it?

If there was a way to 'teather' the camera to a computer and use the processing engine in the camera while editing on a computer it would be AMAZING. You connect the camera via a very high speed interface, maybe fiber will be necessary, and use the processing engine in the camera to render and output to a monitor using the camera's built-in ports, HDMI, HDSDI, etc....

Now this would be awesome!

I am guessing here, I dont work for Red or anything but I think this is not how the camera works.

You'll notice 3k gets higher frame rates than 1080p. This is just one reason I think that raw recording is not really processor intensive. (dont get me wrong, you need a lot to process 120 raw fps, but its more about reading the sensor that many times and having a wide enough chanel to write it to fast enough media.

Redrocket is to take all this stuff and play it back / encode it, offload it, etc. So taking the raw and converting to something else. I am guessing that the HDMI etc outs of scarlet / epic are a seperate feed more than a resampling of the raw 3k stream

Total guesses.

I'm pretty sure the camera and RR have completely different functions. The camera has no in-built debayering, which is the main function of the Rocket.

I'm sure they could put it in but then everyone would complain that it costs thousands more!

Besides, the camera needs to be able to keep shooting while the DIT is moving footage through.

The Rocket is perfect and well worth the money.

If you only want to spend a few thousand to make your movie, you need to be prepared to wait for your footage.

I bought a Rocket the first day it was offered, and next to my Red One, it was the smartest thing I ever did!

Jim, I agree that the rocket is worth it but I believe that I, as well as many others looking forward to the Scarlet, won't be able to afford a Red Rocket at first.

Furthermore, the camera must debayer in order to output a monitor and encode 1080p RGB, as well as be able to do so on the fly with playback of footage already recorded.

I see how DITs workflow isn't really ideal for this situation but I can see how single camera environments and a majority of Indie projects would drastically benifit by this feature.

Really, we need Jarred to chime in but I don't want to bother him with this feature request yet, I'll work out some other details and post my ideas...
