Hi,

we purchased a MacPro 5,1 a while ago and our old MacPro 3,1 was designated as an additional editing workstation.
Hardware is pretty much standard MacPro 3,1 stuff besides the RED Rocket and a simple Kona IO Express,
(we had one of those boxes flying around in our office, so we though lets put it to good use) for monitoring and unbalanced audio out, thats basically all i need from the kona box.
Let me tell you, i am very much used to problems when it comes to Kona3 cards and RED Rockets, they just don`t like each other.
As you all are probably aware, there are some strange issues with the Kona3 cards when you pair it with a Rocket in the same system.
Some people got sound issues, framedrops or whatever. As a workaround i set up 2 different partitions on our System SSD one with the Rocket.kext and the other one without it, that did the trick for us.

Unfortunately it`s not that simple with the IO Express. Everytime i try to install the RED Rocket and the Kona PCIe card and connect the card to the IO Express box my system needs a very long time to boot and eventually shows the login screen. But even after that my keyboard doesn`t respond any longer and if i wait a while again, i can finally login into the system but the Kona PCIe card, under the MacOS system report is gone and it only lists the other pcie devices i have. (FC HBA, RED Rocket, GPU)
I tried to remove the driver packages of both cards but only, if i remove the RED rocket card the system behaves as it should and i can use the Kona IO Express normally.
Thats a huge hassle for me because i need full screen monitoring and at least analog audio out to gave that machine to our editing-assistant.

What about the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for example. Can i expect that configuration to work better then the Rocket+Kona combo?
I appreciate your opinions and experiences.

Thank you.

Hi Dennis,
I am sorry to hear you have problems - we are using the Rocket in an Mac Pro (2008?) together with AJA Kona3 with no problem.

Best wishes and kind regards,
Martin
