Smoke 2012 now takes advantage of the RED Rocket so I'm contemplating getting it. I also want to speed up my REDCine-X and soon Storm renders. My concern, it'll be in what I'm told is the 8 lane slot... The Aja Kona 3 & NVidia Quadro FX 4800 are in the 16's. Anyone out there running such a set-up? Any issues, bugs, etc. that I should be ready for?

We've had problems in 8 lane and Redcine not performing well. We swapped our NVidia card and Rocket around and now performs fine in 16

The Rocket is only only 8 lane gen 1 card.

Kona is only a 4 lane gen 1 card.

Rocket works at max speed in an 8 lane slot. If you have problems with the Rocket in an 8 lane slot it was not because you only had 8 lanes.

I recommend looking into a PCIe expander.

Are you sure about that (the part about Smoke, that is)? Have you actually seen it "work" and in what capacity? I'm only asking because I have yet to see any evidence of it actually doing what Autodesk has claimed it should do in their systems since the release of Smoke 2011. If 2012 actually enabled something, I'd like to know what that is.

From Autodesk Smoke on Mac 2012 SP2 help page:

"Red Rocket Driver

You must install driver 1.4.6 or higher from RED to be able to use the Red Rocket."

Haven't seen it in action so I guess I'll be the guinea pig ;0)

Let me know if it actually does anything. Based on my own experience with 2011 - which claimed the same thing - I'm still understandably skeptical.....

Rocket is working great and makes grading & exporting with either RedCine & Storm a breeze. Smoke, well, it works but doesn't do much other than make your imports instantaneous. In other words, drag and drop the R3D's into your library and you're ready to go; no background rendering. Load it to your edit desk and you are off to the races. As for the timeline, it plays effortlessly, but it always did once it was in. As for editing, composting, etc., I saw no difference in performance. As for processing, same.

Does anyone know if Smoke supports dual red rocket cards for Epic or stereoscopic work? I'm currently using it now without a red rocket card on my 12 core Mac Pro and it's working very well. Expecting to delve into stereoscopic editing once our Epics arrive. Would love to see how Smoke can support that workflow.
