  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red rocket + after effects

I'm curious too...we're trying to figure out how After Effects uses it. There doesn't seem to be an "enable red rocket" preference anywhere. I tried rendering out a 15 second R3D file from After Effects CS5 and it was going to take over 15 minutes (only basic key and color correction done).... so clearly the Rocket isn't working in our configuration.
I'm assuming that it's user error ?

AE has no realtime playback capability outside of ram preview. Rocket will mostly speed up renders in AE.

I haven't seen any render improvement in AE via the Rocket. Is there anyway to verify this with someone from Adobe or Red?

Last time I compared render times it was at least twice as fast (if I remember correctly).

You can enable/disable the rockett: use the Enable RED Rocket (Global Setting) menu in the RED (R3D) Source Settings dialog box. The options are None, One, and All. The One and All settings refer to the maximum number that will be used by After Effects; if fewer are available, then only the available number will be used.
In my tests it doubled both speeds: playback and rendering, like from 3fps to 6 in playback and from 1fps to 2 rendering with only curves adjustments.

Yes I've got those settings checked but I've seen no real difference: perhaps my expectations are to high? I'm starting to get the feeling that adobe hasn't been able to fully harness the rocket yet?

There is very little documentation on the use of the rocket with CS5 from users... And official Adobe whitepapers state that the rocket speeds up renders in AE and playback in AP... Im just not seeing it. I hope I'm just missing something here because I was really excited about this workflow.

what are your hardware specs? the amount of ram, disk speeds, and processing power could be making a huge difference right now. AE dedicates a lot to ram now, and rocket use uses a decent amount of ram too. Factors like these could be the reason in why you aren't seeing a difference.

That isn't quite fair ;) When we enable the rocket we decode all frames as fast as either the app wants it or as fast as the rocket can give it to us. This depends on the app. AE does not do as well at prescheduling so you get much less benefit from having the rocket present. Whereas PPro can pretty much nail 4k FullRes in realtime (minus about 17 dropped frames in the first few seconds). We are working on fixing the dropped frame issue but that should be solved soon. AE just isn't designed to fully exploit the rocket at this time. You should get at least a 2x speedup however.

Cheers

Dave

Yes, that's about what I see in AE. The tradeoff with AE seems to be that it doesn't seem to benefit from the "render multiple frames" option when the rocket is in play. So it speeds up rendering from native r3d files, but I'm still not sure it isn't a better idea to pre-render to get faster overall throughput. David, what's your thought about that?

I can live with AE's performance (I very rarely use it)... I would however love to get to the bottom of why I'm not seeing full performance in AP. My system simply will not play 4K full res R3D's in realtime. I'm getting 1/4 playback fairly consistently, but not always.

I'm not sure how to go about finding the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Michael,
Like Tom asked what are your hardware specs?

You are correct MP won't work with rocket. That is a longer term issue I am speaking with Rob about. The rocket is only allowed one client application and when we use MP in AE we have x number of after effects. I think you need to see which is better for your comp.

Read my comments in the other thread. and answer there...

Hi Michael,
Like Tom asked what are your hardware specs?

Mac Pro (snow leopard) all apps up to date
16 core, 2.26 ghz
16GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 285
Red Rocket
esata G-Raid

This system was beat by a quad core and a laptop (during render)... so there is definitely something going on.

That makes perfect sense.

Michael,

I just got the Rocket and did extensive testing in AE. When no effects are applied, RAM preview was increased 2X (30 frames in 10 secs). However when any adjustments were made involving both geometry and levels, it killed the performance to where there was hardly any benefit. My guess is that the performance bottleneck is in image processing and the rocket is only helping decode R3Ds, a small part of the task when you are compositing (or even doing sophisticated editing).
