I'm getting ready to upgrade my RED to MX and really am tempted to spring for the RedRocket combo deal.

But I think there is a big question for a lot of us out there, will RED Rocket™ be supported, or useful for footage from Epic/Scarlet? I've been digging through posts but haven't found anything definitive.

Which makes me think... Red Rocket will probably be supported to work with footage from the new cameras, but not as fast as it handles Red One footage.

So, what are the odds that a RED Rocket™ 2 is in the works?

RED Rocket™ is pretty powerful, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a simple way to firmware update it at the very least for Scarlet if not for Epic 5K footage to function at the same level as it does for RED ONE- it's all going to be based on the same codec as the RED ONE uses so why wouldn't it be retrofitted?

That said, there's always room for improvement and I'd be surprised if there weren't at some point in the future a newer version of the RED Rocket™- perhaps with support for higher resolution and 3D displays once those become more commonplace. Just personally I don't expect it for another year or two, not when there are so many other version ones that we need to get our grubby paws on from RED first.

Well, if we are speculating...

Once upon a time somebody here noted that a configuration file (or perhaps it was a log file) noted that there was a line along the idea of:

NUM_ROCKET_CARDS_INSTALLED=1

Or something like that.

Makes one wonder if multiple-rocket install scenarios will be supported.

New codecs and compression would require new processing machines? ie. computers.
Even with the REDrocket, would the actual computers handle such amount of data?

Speculation of course.

ROCKET works with EPIC and Scarlet footage.

Wasn't RED Rocket originally spec'd for 4K real time, but only 25 fps at 5K? Have you been making improvements via firmware updates?

How will it fare with higher data rates and frame rates a la 5K at 100 fps in the Epic?

I would imagine it wouldn't matter what over cranked frame rate you have (100 fps for slow motion) if your time base doesn't surpass 25 fps. Remember where talking about the playback frame rate of 24 or 25fps not the actual recorded frame rate. If you have your time base set at 30 fps it might not be realtime, but at 25 and below it still sounds like where still good to go.

Shhhhhhhhhh!

If you are still 'thinking about it' ... just get a demo organised, will save you lots of time (eg : scanning RedUser).
The good folk at RED UK have one running so I popped down to have a play. You can then see with your own eyes and put to bed any hesitation.

WARNING : you will not leave without one => second best investment after a R1 :emote_happyhappy:

I think I'll go look at mother boards with multiple x8 PCIe slots just for the heck of it.

Something like this? Not sure what kind of bandwidth that board has. But that many busses... they must have at least thought of someone wanting to connect a lot of high bandwidth devices...

But like they say... don't buy before you need - it'll be cheaper tomorrow. Unless you're trying to push the price down for the rest of us by early adopting, then go right ahead.

Yeah I'd get a demo- once you see what the Rocket can do and how fast it is with RED footage you'll wonder why you waited so long. It's really high up there with what I would consider essential pieces of RED gear.
